Erickson named hunter education coordinator

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has named Anthony Erickson to serve as hunter education coordinator for Dickinson County.

Erickson has been a hunters education instructor since 2005 and has worked with many organizations and groups. His training group currently holds two hunter education classes per year at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club north of Channing. Erickson is also the chief range safety officer of the club.

Some of the duties of a county coordinator include:

— Recruiting and mentoring new instructors.

— Evaluating other instructors, ensuring quality and consistency control.

— Stockpiling supplies for upcoming courses.

Another main purpose of the coordinator position is to be a liaison between instructors and the DNR’s Recreational Training Division.

Erickson and his group have been instructing out of the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club since 2020. There are nine current instructors in the county and Erickson has personally recruited seven of them.

In the Upper Peninsula’s 15 counties, there are only three county coordinators representing the counties, Erickson said.

To purchase a hunting license in Michigan, anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1960, is required to successfully complete an approved hunter safety education course.

To register for a Michigan Hunters Education field day, a student must first take an approved online course. Once the course is competed, they can then register for an upcoming field day through the Michigan DNR website. Upon successful completion of the field day, the student can be issued a license.
