HERMANSVILLE — U.P. Trappers of District 3 will host the annual Arduin Brothers New Trappers Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Frank Rodman Community Center in Hermansville.

The workshop opens at 8 a.m. and will run until about 2 p.m. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Included in the day’s activities are demonstrations on trapping weasels, red squirrels, mink, muskrats and raccoons. These demonstrations will be done by members of U.P. Trappers.

Along with the methods and tips for trapping these furbearers, they all will stress the importance of legal and humane capture, sportsmanship in the field and above all safety on the trapline.

Kids will have a chance to build their own mink box under the guidance of U.P. Trappers members and other items will be added to complete the “mink kit” –which will be theirs to take home. Those youngsters who don’t wish to build a mink box can choose a weasel/squirrel kit, a muskrat kit, or a raccoon kit instead. Youngsters get only one kit but will have the four choices.

Bob Steinmetz of U.P. District 3 Trappers, left, holds a mink box in place as a young lady assisted by her father builds her own mink box.

Besides the scheduled activities attendees can sell fur, try to identify various furs, sign up for upcoming trapper education classes, join U.P. Trappers, buy supplies and ask questions of experienced trappers.

The concession stand will be open throughout the day.

“I have attended every workshop that has ever been held,” said Dennis Girardi, a longtime member of U.P. Trappers. “I have noticed that the attendance increases each year. Adults and even veteran trappers attend, and they always learn something new. It is also noteworthy that more women who may be interested in trying out the sport are attending. This workshop shortens the learning curve for beginners that us old- timers had to learn on our own. I sure hope that these beginners develop an interest and enjoy a lifetime of great outdoor experiences.”

Trevor Barnes of Barnes Hide and Fur in lower Michigan will be on hand to buy fur, and he will have a wide selection of trapping gear for sale. Anyone looking for specific trapping equipment should call him at 269-967-4475 so he can bring what’s needed.

Barnes will also answer any questions about the fur market.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers for their help with this event. Thanks also to all who have donated items for prizes, raffles, etc.,” workshop director Mike Lewis said.
