Norway baseball takes down Gladstone 7-2
NORWAY – Owen Baij recorded three hits and five RBIs to support the three-hit pitching of Bryce Adams and Cole Baij as the Norway Knights won their fifth consecutive game to start the season with a 7-2 triumph over visiting Gladstone on Wednesday.
Baij belted a triple and scored two runs, while Adams drove home a run, Cameron Varda drew four walks and scored three runs and Landon Amundson recorded a single and a run scored.
“Gladstone is a really good test for our team and we played pretty darn well for mid-April,” Norway coach Tony Adams said. “We did a lot of things well today (but) we have to continue to improve.”
After the Braves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Knights answered immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Gladstone sliced the Norway lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, but the Knights responded with two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win going away.
“Our offense was pretty good and Owen Baij had the huge day at the plate,” Coach Adams said.
Bryce Adams got the start on the hill and notched the win, going four innings while allowing three hits and one earned run.
The senior walked four and struck out two.
Cole Baij was dominant in relief for Norway, striking out eight of the nine hitters he faced in a hitless three innings to earn the save.
Coach Adams said that Bryce Adams’ ability to eat up some innings helped his pitching staff with the club’s busy schedule this week.
“With six games, that was huge,” he said.
