KINGSFORD — Sophomore Onika Smeester scored three goals and senior Libby Vross added another to lead the Kingsford Flivvers to a 4-1 victory over Houghton in a girls varsity soccer match Monday at Commemorative Field.

Vross got the Flivvers going in the first half with an unassisted goal which ricocheted off a Houghton player into the net.

With her team up by a goal heading into the second half, Smeester took over the scoring from there, posting an unassisted goal, again off a Gremlin player. She pushed the Flivver lead to 3-0 off an assist from freshman Lexi Gunville and then finished the scoring with an unassisted tally.

Freshman Kylee Woodward played well in her first start holding the Gremlins to a single marker.

“Overall, the girls played hard in a cold, wet home opener and we were happy for the win,” Flivvers coach Jenette Gunville said.

The Flivvers were scheduled to host Three Lakes on Tuesday, but the match was postponed because of weather. The makeup date is to be determined.

Starting at $2.99/week.
