KINGSFORD — Senior Gavin Trevillian delivered a bases-loaded hit in the bottom of the seventh, powering Kingsford to a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win against Escanaba in varsity baseball action Wednesday at Gary Spigarelli Field.
Following a run-saving play by sophomore left fielder Bradlee Bottesi in the top half of the final inning to preserve a 3-3 ballgame, Kingsford loaded the bases with nobody out in their half of the seventh. Trevillian jumped all over a first-pitch fastball and drilled it over the head of Escanaba center fielder Brody Ison, who was in shallow to try to have a chance for a play at the plate on anything down in front of him.
“It’s exactly what we needed,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said of Trevillian’s game-winner. “And Bottesi, that was the play of the game for sure. It gave us the opportunity to win.”
Escanaba got their lead-off hitter Brian Boutilier on in the top of the seventh with a walk. He moved to second on a sacrifice. Cleanup hitter Mikaiden Hughes came up with two out and dumped a hit to left. Bottesi collected the ball and fired a strike home to catcher Jack Kriegl, who applied the tag on Boutilier in plenty of time a few steps in front of home plate to end the frame.
“You have to send the runner there,” Kriegl said. “I would have done the same thing because if he scores, you probably win the ballgame. Man, Bradlee had two clutch throws for us tonight.”
A lead-off walk followed by two hit batsman helped Kingsford load the bags in the final half of the seventh ahead of Trevillian’s game-winner. Trevillian finished 3-for-4, including a RBI double in the first.
The Flivvers jumped out 3-0 on Esky after two, but some miscues in the field helped the visitors claw back. After a two-run fourth, the game was knotted 3-3.
“We kind of put ourselves in a bad spot,” Kriegl said. “We started off really well, had some timely hits, but those errors let them back in the game. Escanaba is a phenomenal program, so anytime you can play with them and have an opportunity to win is huge.”
Escanaba also threatened in the sixth, with the first two batters reaching. But senior Garrett Brown settled in and struck out the next three straight to leave the runners stranded.
Senior Gavin Grondin started for Kingsford and pitched four innings. He allowed four hits and fanned three before giving way to Brown, who allowed just two hits with his three strikeouts. Escanaba walked three times.
Kingsford also totaled six hits. Grondin tripled in the Flivvers’ two-run second. Brown and senior Andres Finley added singles.
The win was the second straight for Flivvers, who also belted Marquette 18-2 in five innings on the road Tuesday. Kingsford pounded out 14 hits in that one, with Finley smacking two doubles and two singles to lead the charge. Bottesi also added a double. Trevillian earned the win, fanning three and allowing just one hit and one walk before being relieved by Finley.
Kingsford (3-5) heads to Gladstone Monday.
