KINGSFORD – Behind a complete game shutout performance by senior Andres Finley, Kingsford secured its first win of the season with a 5-0 triumph over Negaunee Monday afternoon at Gary Spigarelli Memorial Field in what was a breezy and chilly home opener for the Flivvers.
“It’s nice to finally get one,” Flivvers head coach Joe Kriegl said. “It feels good. We played really good baseball today. Andres pitched incredible. We hit the ball. We got guys in scoring position, put the ball in play and got some hits to bring some guys in. That’s what we need to do. I’m happy for the kids. It’s cold out here today, but we’re playing baseball and that’s the key.”
Finley was firing strikes all game for the Flivvers, who improved to 1-2 with the win. In what was an 88-pitch effort, Finley scattered three hits, walked two and struck out four. He ran into a little trouble in the sixth, as the Miners had runners on first and third with just one away, but junior catcher Jack Kriegl gunned down a runner attempting to steal second, before a highlight reel catch by senior second baseman Garrett Brown ended the threat.
Brown snagged a bullet off the bat of Negaunee’s Devin Jurmu on a ball that seemed destined to be a RBI single to the gap in right center, but Brown dove to his right and got just enough height from his leap to haul it down.
Senior Gavin Trevillian led the way at the plate for the Flivvers with two doubles and three runs scored. He scored the game’s first run in the second inning after a double, stolen base and a sacrifice fly by senior Joey Weber.
Trevillian scored again in the Flivvers’ two-run third. That inning saw Finley lead off with a double and later score on a wild pitch. Trevillian walked and was on third when he got caught in a run down off a pick off attempt, but a throwing error allowed him to cross home safely.
Trevillian ripped his second double of the game in the fifth with a shot down the line in left field and wound up scoring thanks to a two-out single by junior Jacob Deuter. Senior Gavin Grondin scored the final run after doubling in the sixth and coming home on a grounder by Brown.
The Flivvers totaled eight hits. Along with Trevillian’s two doubles, the Flivvers got two hits from Brown and Grondin. Senior Nic Novara added a single.
“Negaunee has a really good team,” Kriegl said. “They’re going to be one of the better teams in the UP this season. This was their first game. They had a couple of errors that really hurt them. But when we go up there later in the season, it’s going to be a bugger, that’s for sure.”
The Flivvers head down to Crandon this afternoon.
