Badgers outslug Lena in softball opener

LENA, Wis. — Paige Guardiola smacked a triple and drove in five runs while six Niagara batters produced multiple-hit games to power the Lady Badgers to a 13-11 season-opening victory over host Lena on Thursday.

“For our first game and limited time outside practicing, I was proud of the performance our girls had,” Niagara coach Joe Champeau said. “This is a very talented team and I’m excited for the upcoming schedule.”

Guardiola, Elesia Sweig, Bristol Sanicki, Mallory Sanicki, Peyton Allred and Rachael Walker all contributed two hits in the victory.

Sweig posted a triple and two RBIs, while Bristol Sanicki, Allred and Walker added an RBI each.

“We hit the ball really well,” Champeau said. “Our team was able to generate 14 hits throughout the night, which was outstanding.”

Sweig got the start and picked up the win. She threw five innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out four. Guardiola came on in relief and earned the save with two innings of work during which she allowed one earned run.

The Lady Badgers notched the win despite committing five errors.

“We made some mistakes fielding that we typically don’t make, but I know for sure this will get better as we practice outdoors more,” Champeau said.

The Lady Badgers are slated to host Norway on Monday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
