Florence senior takes 3rd at WIAA final
MADISON, Wis. — After rolling through the sectional round, Florence senior Breyson Kelley made the trip to Madison, Wis. over the weekend for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 individual state tournament.
Kelley made it through the opening day of competition and brought home a third place finish in the 190-pound weight class.
Entering Friday as the No. 3 seed, Kelley received a first round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals. There he faced Isaiah Carton from Shiocton. Kelley defeated Carton in both the regional and sectional finals. He defeated Carton for a third time this season, by way of a 17-1 technical fall.
“It’s difficult to defeat a wrestler three times at this level,” Bobcats head coach Ed Kelley said.
With a victory in hand, Kelley faced off with the No. 2 seed, William Becker from Pardeeville.
After a scoreless first period, Becker picked up seven points in the second.
“Breyson needed a big move to get back into the match, but ended up getting pinned,” coach Kelley said. “Becker was long and lanky and used it to his advantage. Breyson did not face anyone built like that this season.”
On Saturday, Kelley competed in the third place match against Iowa Grant/Highland’s Gavin Hinderman. Kelley dominated the entire match and picked up an 11-0 victory to secure third place.
Kelley ended his senior year with a 54-4 overall record. That is a school record for wins in a season. He also secured a regional and sectional title.
