Champions: Iron Kings win MAHA 12U state title

MARQUETTE — After opening the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association’s 12U state tournament with a 2-2 tie against the Petoskey Junior Northmen, the Dickinson Area Hockey Association Iron Kings 12U B team rattled off four-straight wins to claim a MAHA Tier III state title on Sunday in Marquette.

The Iron Kings faced off with the Northmen in Sunday’s championship game at the Lakeview Arena and they dismantled Petoskey, 4-1. Sam Hemgren and Joe Powell each scored two goals in the game for DAHA. They outshot the Northmen 32-to-7.

Tournament action began on Friday for DAHA.

On Saturday, the Iron Kings rattled off a 12-0 win over the Trenton Blades 12U B team. That game didn’t reach the third period. It also grabbed an 11-0 win over Honeybaked in the quarterfinals.

The Iron Kings made it to the championship game with an 11-0 win in the semifinals against the Saginaw Badgers, setting up a rematch with Petoskey.

During the tournament, the Iron Kings outscored their opponents 40-3.

DAHA entered the tournament on a roll after going 5-0 in the district rounds played in Escanaba. It outscored opponents 44-to-10 during districts.
