Wykons snap losing streak with road win

IRON RIVER — The last time the West Iron County girls basketball team left the court after a win was Jan. 3. That was until Tuesday night.

The Wykons got their long-awaited third win of the season as they defeated Bessemer 39-27 in a nonconference contest in Bessemer.

The victory put an end to West Iron’s 11-game losing streak, its longest in several years.

“We didn’t win in convincing fashion, but we needed a win and we got it,” WIC coach Eric Shamion said.

The Wykons (3-14) won the contest without the services of freshman Bristol Shamion who broke her toe in a game against Forest Park on Feb. 7. The first-year point guard had missed the previous six games before the bout with the Lady Trojans with a sprained ankle.

Against the Speedgirls (2-16), West Iron got off to another slow start, a bugaboo for the team all season long. Behind four points from Audrey Stone and three each from Keira Graham and Maddie Guglielmotto, Bessmer took a 10-7 lead after one period.

But the Wykons took the upper hand in the second when they outscored the Speedgirls 14-4 to go into halftime with an 18-14 edge.

Sidney Storti recorded six points in the quarter for WIC, while Lacey Shamion scored five, Laurel Johnson added a bucket and Julia Swenski chipped in with a free throw.

Using a full-court zone press, West Iron pulled away in the third quarter with a 14-6 run to head into the fourth period with a 35-20 edge.

Storti and Lily De Sousa logged four points each, while Swenski and Kaitlyn Smith both chipped in with three points as the Wykons took control.

Bessemer outscored West Iron 7-4 in the fourth quarter to account for the final 12-point margin. Freshman Grace Smith hit a bucket for the Wykons in the final frame.

Stone paced the Speedgirls with 12 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line. Graham accounted for eight points with two 3-pointers and Guglielmotto finished with seven, including one triple.

Storti topped the Wykons with 16 points and nine rebounds, putting together her best performance of the year, her coach said.

“It was nice to see Sid have a dominant game in the post,” coach Shamion said.

Kaitlyn Smith added six points for the Wykons, Lacey Shamion finished with five and De Sousa and Swenski contributed four each.

Johnson and Grace Smith both chipped in with two points.

The Wykons head to Norway Thursday to take on the Knights (8-9).
