Mountaineers dominate the Bulldogs

HANCOCK — Although the Iron Mountain boys varsity basketball team suffered its third loss of the season last week, it immediately righted the ship on Monday.

The Mountaineers (17-3, 9-1) made the trip to Hancock for a West PAC-East Division clash with the Bulldogs and took care of business, securing a 73-23 win.

“The kids shared the ball, and everybody contributed,” IM head coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson said.

Four Iron Mountain players reached double figures in the game, while 10 players recorded a bucket.

The Mountaineers overwhelmed Hancock in the first quarter.

Senior Evan Copley led the way with 10 points while Oskar Kangas and Gerald Sampoll-Torres each tallied six. Sophomore Brayden Kassin pitched in 10 points and they led 34-4 after eight minutes.

Kangas and Sampoll-Torres each scored four points in the second, which led Iron Mountain. Ian Marttila, Copley, Max White and Collin Punzel each added two. The lead ballooned to 40 points at halftime.

The Mountaineers scored 23 points in the final two quarters. Lane Wender led the way with six points and they easily secured the win.

Sampoll-Torres led all scorers in the contest with 14 points.

Iron Mountain also received contributions from Kangas (10 points), Marttila (8 points), Copley (12 points), Kassin (13 points), White (2 points), Punzel (4 points), Jaqai Smith (1 points), Charles Anderson (3 points) and Wender (6 points).

The Mountaineers end their regular season slate on Thursday in Houghton against the Gremlins.

FLIVVERS 61, MAROONS 42

MENOMINEE — Every game counts with the Kingsford boys varsity basketball team chasing down Marquette in the Great Northern U.P. Conference race.

On Monday, the Flivvers (16-3, 6-1) took that to heart as they went into Menominee and dominated the Maroons (11-10, 4-4) en route to a 61-42 conference win.

“Menominee is a tough place to play,” Kingsford head coach Ben Olsen said. “They are always well coached, and if you want to beat them, you have to play a pretty clean game. Early in the game we had some issues with their halfcourt defense and their transition offense. At halftime we talked about taking care of the basketball and limiting their run out scores and I think we did a much better job of that.”

Menominee stifled the Flivvers’ offense in the first quarter, holding seniors Gavin Grodin and Morgan Sleik to three points apiece. As a result, the Maroons led 12-8 after eight minutes.

Kingsford sorted things out in the second quarter. Sleik tallied eight points and Grondin added seven. It retook the lead, 27-23, at halftime.

“Morgan Sleik and Jack Kreigl kept us afloat offensively in the first half,” Olsen said. “Mostly Jack attacking and dishing off to Morgan on the block. Jack Kriegl then took over some of the scoring load on his own in the third quarter.

“Kriegl has been lights out since the Norway game. He took one shot in that game, and we, as a coaching staff have been trying to get him to be more aggressive, calling his own number. He’s done just that. It takes so much pressure off Grondin when someone else can get to the rim and make shots. I can’t say enough about Jack and what he’s done these last couple of weeks.”

Kreigl scored 10 points in the third quarter. Senior Gavin Trevillian added six in the frame and the Flivvers took a 49-34 advantage into the final frame. It was over from there.

Grondin and Kreigl led Kingsford with 16 points apiece.

The Flivvers also received contributions from Owen Olkkonen (2 points), Trevillian (8 points), Sleik (13 points) and Jett Buckley (6 points).

Kingsford wraps up its regular season in Marquette on Thursday for a shot at a co-GNC title.

“That’s all we’ve talked about since losing to Marquette,” Olsen said. “Just give us a chance and let the cards lie where they may.

“Our kids are excited about this next challenge, and it will be a great way to end the season, going into the tournament.”

KNIGHTS 75, BRONCOS 53

BARK RIVER — Although Bark River-Harris came to play on Monday, there wasn’t an answer for Knights’ senior Bryce Adams.

The Norway boys varsity basketball team rode the hot hand and rolled to a 75-53 Skyline Central Conference-Large School win.

It was a struggle for points in the first quarter. But the Knights managed to escape the frame with a 10-9 advantage.

Senior Mason Trudeau led Norway with five points in the quarter.

Then Adams caught fire.

He connected on five 3-pointers in the second while Trudeau added five, giving the Knights a 36-22 advantage at halftime.

Adams added two more 3-pointers to his tally in the third quarter.

He scored 10 points in eight minutes. Junior Anthony Pineda added six points as Norway held a 60-38 lead entering the final frame.

Trudeau scored six points in the fourth and the Knights secured the win.

Adams led all scorers in the contest with 28 points.

Norway also received contributions from AJ Gallino (8 points), Cole Baij (4 points), Pineda (10 points), Trudeau (19 points) and Elliot Kraemer (6 points).

The Knights wrap up the regular season on Thursday at home against Superior Central.
