Local wrestlers advance to regional round

IRON MOUNTAIN — Over the weekend, wrestlers from the Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Norway and North Central varsity wrestling teams participated in MHSAA individual districts.

The Flivvers made the trip to Grayling for MHSAA Division 3 District 17 action and 10 wrestlers qualified for the regional tournament on Saturday in Hart: Reed Degroot, Tegan Ray, Nolan Hendrickson, Tyler Bray, Max Sundquist, Jake Lockhart, Brettin Rouse, Mason Tappy and Connor White. On Sunday, Kingsford freshman Ginger Majurin qualified for regionals at the girls districts.

“Ginger Majurin is making some school history in the girls division and also is starting to make a name for herself in the state,” Kingsford head coach Darren Groleau said. “We wanted to see what Ginger was made out of and had one of the toughest weight brackets with four ranked girls at 135.”

Degroot picked up first place in the 126 pound bracket, defeating Gabriel Buyze-Prieto from Kalkaska in a 16-7 majority decision.

Ray also brought home the top spot at 132 pounds. He ended up winning the championship due to a medical forfeit.

“Tegan is hungry for the competition,” Groleau added. “He was a little disappointed that he didn’t get to wrestle in his finals match.”

Hendrickson brought home third place at 138 pounds. Bray won the 150-pound division, picking up three wins by pin.

Sundquist took home his second district title at 175 pounds. He defeated Ogemaw Heights’ Conner Lambert in a 7-2 decision. Lockhart was third at 175. Rouse picked up a third place finish at 190 pounds.

“To see him make it out of districts is so rewarding for a kid who works hard and does everything we ask of him,” Groleau said.

Tappy finished third in the 215-pound bracket while White took third at 215 pounds.

“Man it was nice to see Mason back on the mat after being injured for the past month,” Groleau said. “He did not have an easy day battling some of the state’s best. Mason got some redemption in the third place match beating Ben Wilson of Gladstone.”

Division 4

Iron Mountain, North Central and Norway all made the trip to Manistique for the Division 4 District 25 tournament.

Mountaineers seniors Daniel Manier and Di’Angelo Saldana each advanced to the regional round on Saturday in Charlevoix. Manier took first at 150 pounds while Saldana ended up in third at 138 pounds.

Manier picked up a 15-0 technical fall over Newberry’s Gaijye Depew, a pin over Kaliiah Wieczerek from Munising and an 11-4 decision against Collin Jess of Charlevoix.

Saldana went 3-1 on the day, winning all three by pin.

North Central ended the day with three wrestlers qualifying for the regional tournament. Cooper Rabb pinned Manistique’s Grayden Holt, to secure first place at 126 pounds. In 144-pound action, Prayer LaBonte grabbed first place with an 8-0 majority decision over Onaway Area’s Toby Pike.

Myles Nehring, 215 pounds, finished in third with a pin over Phat Nguyen from Charlevoix.

Norway had four wrestlers finish in fourth place on Saturday, Matt Doney, Landon Ross, Landon Amundson and Cameran Nevil.
