Kingsford hockey ties Manistique

IRON MOUNTAIN — The varsity hockey season is quickly winding down, with the Kingsford Flivvers set to host Calumet for their final game of the regular season tonight at Mountain View Ice Arena at 5:30 p.m.

Kingsford (10-12-2) found itself in another overtime affair Tuesday at Manistique, settling for a scoreless tie against the Emeralds.

It marked the fourth time in the past five games that Kingsford has gone to an extra session.

Unfortunately for the Flivvers, they hold an 0-2-2 record in those contests.

The Flivvers did score a goal against Manistique.

Sophomore defenseman Seth Greenleaf connected from inside the blue line during the second period.

However, the goal was waived off due to a player in the crease call against Kingsford.

Junior goalie Nate Scullon secured his second shoutout of the season in the tie, stopping 33 shots.

Both of Scullon’s shutouts have occurred in the past month, as he has now lowered his goals-against average to 3.38 heading into the regular season finale and regional play.

Kingsford fired 28 shots on the Emeralds, and had several prime scoring chances that just didn’t connect.

Tonight’s game against Calumet is the first and only meeting between the squads this season. The Copper Kings enter play at 11-13-0, but like the Flivvers they have been playing better hockey of late. Calumet is 5-3-0 over its past eight games.

The Flivvers, showing a 4-2-2 mark over their last eight games, are set to head to Escanaba for their regional game, facing the Eskymos on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Starting at $2.99/week.
