KINGSFORD — Earlier in the week, the Kingsford boys varsity team finally knocked off Iron Mountain. While the Flivvers (15-3, 5-1) could have stumbled against their next opponent, head coach Ben Olsen wasn’t worried about that with his team.

He was right.

“We talked about not having a let-down game after expending a lot of energy and emotion on Tuesday,” Olsen said. “The kids did a great job of getting after it right from the tip.”

On Thursday, No.3-ranked Kingsford overwhelmed Peshtigo (8-12, 4-9) in Flivver Gym for a lopsided 66-33 non-conference victory.

“I’m very pleased with the effort and game tonight,” Olsen said. “Our offense looked really good. We have been talking about being great at the things each player is good at for the last few games and I feel that is exactly what the kids are doing.”

The Flivvers came out in the first quarter and locked down the Bulldogs’ offense. Kingsford held them to seven points in eight minutes. Offensively, it didn’t miss a beat from Tuesday. Senior Gavin Grondin scored six points in the frame while Morgan Sleik and Jack Kriegl each added four.

After one quarter, the Flivvers led 21-7.

Peshtigo’s best frame was the second. It scored 13 points, however, Grondin had 16 in the quarter. Gavin Trevillian added a 3-pointer and the lead ballooned to 26 points at the break.

Kingsford kept up the defensive pressure in the third, once again, holding the Bulldogs to seven points.

Kriegl and Jack Olson each made a three in the quarter, helping Kingsford to a 58-27 lead entering the final frame.

Andres Finley led the Flivvers in the fourth with four points and they locked up the win.

Grondin led all scorers in the contest with 24 points. He made three 3-pointers and went 3-for-3 from the foul line.

Kingsford also received contributions from Owen Olkkonen (7 points), Matt Sundquist (2 points), Kriegl (7 points), Trevillian (3 points), Olson (3 points), Sleik (10 points), Jett Buckley (4 points), Gaige Sorenson (2 points) and Finley (4 points).

As a team, the Flivvers went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Kingsford has two games left in its regular season slate, both of which are Great Northern U.P. Conference contests. On Monday, it heads to Menominee.

“We have a huge week coming up,” Olsen said. “Menominee on Monday and Marquette on Thursday. We need to keep stacking good quarters on top of each other and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. I’m proud of this group and enjoying this journey we are on together.”

BLUEJAYS 56, BOBCATS 43

FLORENCE, Wis. — Earlier in the week, Florence boys varsity basketball coach Bryan Bomberg wasn’t happy with his team’s effort.

On Thursday, the Bobcats (5-13, 2-5) turned things around against Three Lakes (7-12, 4-4).

However, it wasn’t enough to pick up the win as they fell to the Bluejays, 56-43, in a Northern Lakes Conference clash.

“First, I want to compliment my players; we battled and we competed,” Bomberg said. “The day before, we had arguably one of our most complete practices. As the coach, I felt good leaving the gym about our squad. Same with last night. We didn’t win. There are no moral victories — but we are learning and gaining valuable lessons. Biggest thing for us tonight was our shots were not falling and we had some costly mistakes down the stretch.”

Three Lakes opened the game on a roll, racking up 30 points in the opening frame. Mason Koski led the Bobcats in the first half with six points while Carson Chrisman and Bradly Steber each scored five. The Bluejays led 30-18 at halftime.

Florence battled back in the second half. It made five threes and tallied 25 points. Chrisman made three while Steber and Truth Setner each hit one.

Chrisman led the Bobcats with 14 points. He also tallied six rebounds and an assist.

Florence also received contributions from Steber (12 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal), Setner (9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal) and Koski (8 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals).

The Bobcats are in Goodman, Wis. on Tuesday to face the Patriots.

Starting at $2.99/week.
