Kelley advances to WIAA sectionals

CRANDON, Wis. — Three Florence varsity wrestlers made the trip to Crandon, Wis. for the WIAA Division 3 super regionals on Saturday — Ely Marefke, Mason Butterfield and Breyson Kelley.

Kelley, competing at 190 pounds, was the lone Bobcats’ wrestler to qualify for the sectional tournament.

After receiving a first-round bye, Kelley pinned Manawa’s Corbin Spaulding and Bonduel’s Jayden Popp. Once he reached the finals, Kelley pinned the No. 5-ranked 190-pounder in Wisconsin — Shiocton’s Isaiah Carton. He will wrestle on Saturday in the sectionals in Valders, Wis.

“Breyson Kelley was the first Florence wrestler to win a Super Regional since it was initiated by the WIAA three years ago,” Bobcats head coach Ed Kelley said.

“Breyson will face Evan Hardy of Brillion in the first round (of the sectional). The top 3 wrestlers in each weight class qualifies for the state tournament the following week in Madison, Wis.”

At 138 pounds, Marefke received a first round bye. He fell to Jackson Young of Shiocton in his first match and then rattled off back-to-back wins, defeating Taylor Brown of Gillett/Suring and Oskakwaltha Corneluis of Oneida Nation.

He fell in the fourth place match to Lena’s Lucas Heimke.

Butterfield also received a first round bye at 150 pounds.

He fell to Scott Daniels of Shiocton in his first match and then defeated Kian Carter of Crandon.

Butterfield took home sixth place on the day.
