IRON MOUNTAIN — All season long, Kingsford senior Gavin Grondin has been a problem for opposing teams in the Great Northern Conference.
On Sunday, his rugged defensive effort was recognized in the form of the GNC Defensive Player of the Year award.
The conference honors didn’t stop there for the Flivvers (17-3, 7-1), who also secured a co-conference championship with a 72-60 win over No. 1-ranked Marquette.
First-year head coach Ben Olsen received co-Coach of the Year honors, alongside Marquette’s Rich Ledy.
Kingsford, ranked No. 1 in Division 1-3, also had five players named to the various conference teams. Senior Morgan Sleik was joined on the first team by Grondin. Junior Jack Kriegl made the second team. Senior Gavin Trevillian received special mention honors while junior Owen Olkkonen and sophomore Jett Buckley were named to the honorable mention team.
Grondin ended the regular season averaging 23.7 points per game while tacking on 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 steals.
“He only had four games where he scored under 20 Points,” Flivvers head coach Ben Olsen said. “He’s the most consistent player I’ve ever had. You could almost pencil in 25 points every night, that is incredible at the high school level.”
Sleik battled a concussion early in the season and only played 14 games on the season. However, in that time he scored 12.4 points per game while averaging seven rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.4 assists a contest.
Since the Norway game on Jan. 28, Kriegl has turned up the intensity. He ended the regular season with a 5.7 points per game average. He also tallied 3.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.6 steals a contest.
Trevillian posted 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.6 steals per game in the regular season. Olkkonen averaged 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game.
Buckley averaged 6.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and a steal.
