IRON MOUNTAIN — In another tight battle, Kingsford found itself on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Calumet Thursday evening in Great Lakes Hockey Conference action at Mountain View Ice Arena.
Kingsford slipped to 10-13-2, suffering a second straight shutout in what was its final game of the regular season.
The Flivvers have seen five of their last six games decided by a goal or less with four of those going to overtime. Unfortunately for the Flivvers, they posted a 1-3-2 mark during the stretch and were unable to close the season at .500 or better.
On Thursday evening, the Flivvers had their hands full just trying to match the intensity of the Copper Kings.
“We didn’t have much in the way of jump,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “Work wise, I thought we were OK. I thought we got outplayed in the second big time.
“They stepped it up physically in the second, playing the body, and we were just gassed.”
The score easily could have been a bit more lopsided with Calumet holding a 37-17 advantage in shots, but junior goalie Nate Scullon put in a solid showing between the pipes to keep it close.
“It was a super good game by Scully,” Wadge said. “He played very, very well.”
Junior Ben Anderson scored the lone goal of the game for the visitors at 12:51 of the second. The Copper Kings were overwhelming the Flivvers’ defense and Anderson pounced on a puck right out in front of the net and was able to flip a backhander up and over Scullon’s shoulder.
Assists went to sophomore Luke Hamlin and senior Brendan Boberg.
Shots were even at 10-10 after the first period, but the Flivvers legs simply faded from there.
The Copper Kings held a 15-3 edge in shots in the second and 11-4 in the final period, finishing their season at 12-13-0.
Kingsford received a power play in the final minutes of regulation and yanked Scullon for an additional attacker but was unable to mount much of any sustained attack to take advantage.
The Flivvers head to Escanaba (14-9-0) for regional play Saturday, Feb. 22. Puck drop for that game is 6 p.m. Escanaba swept the regular season series, winning 9-0 in a mercy-rule affair on opening night and posting a 4-1 victory back on Jan. 14.
