BESSEMER — On a frigid day, the Norway girls varsity ski team notched another second-place showing, led by strong individual performances from senior captains Grace Schiltz and Sofia Reusch.

Marquette won the conference race with 27 points, followed by the Knights with 58 points, Ironwood with 101 and Houghton with 112 in Bessemer on Monday.

“Marquette is a tough team to beat, and the fact that we were able to put two skiers in the top three in slalom was really outstanding,” said Knights’ assistant coach Ted Fornetti. “We have been working on some specific techniques in practice, and they were able to reap some of that reward for their hard work. In fact, Schiltz had the fastest time in the first run of the slalom, while Reusch had the fastest time in the second slalom run. That really speaks to the improvements they have been continuing to make.”

Schiltz put up career bests in both the slalom and giant slalom, registering third and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

Reusch brought home second place in the slalom and 10th in the giant slalom.

Sophomore Sophia Fornetti notched a career-best seventh place in the giant slalom and eighth in the slalom. Junior Ingrid Holt posted an 11th in the slalom and a 12th in the giant slalom. New racer Sophia Richardson had four strong runs, finishing 18th in the slalom and 19th in GS in only the second race of her career.

Knights’ sophomore Skyler St. John posted a career-best 11th in the slalom and 16th in the giant slalom. He is the lone member of the Norway boys team and raced individually, as four racers are required for a team score.

The Knights head to Mont Ripley in Houghton on Monday for another conference race.

Starting at $2.99/week.
