Multiple Bobcats reach podium
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Senior Breyson Kelley dominated the competition on Saturday when the Florence wrestling team traveled to Green Bay West High School for the Green Bay United Scramble Invite, ending up in first place in the 190-pound division. But that wasn’t his only monumental accomplishment.
Kelley also set the Bobcats wrestling program’s all-time mark for wins. He ended the day with 141 career wins, passing the previous mark of 138 wins set by Cole Dollar.
“Breyson Kelley did not have much competition for the day,” Florence head coach Ed Kelley said, “easily tech falling all of his opponents.”
Florence sent five wrestlers to the meet, and all of them placed in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
Ely Marefke took home third place at 144 pounds, ending the day at 4-1. He picked up wins over Freedom’s Laine Everson (11-10 decision), Green Bay West/East/Southwest’s Jesus Santos-Martinez (24-7 technical fall), West De Pere’s Caleb Calaway (second-round pin) and Little Chute’s Aydian Stingle (first-period pin).
“His only loss coming from Division 1 state-ranked Olin Neuville of DePere,” Florence head coach Ed Kelley said.
The Bobcats had two wrestlers compete at 150 pounds, Cole Chitko and Mason Butterfield. After dropping the opening match, Chitko rattled off three wins in a row to reach the fifth-place contest. However, he lost to Dylan Froelich from Green Bay West/East/Southwest and took home sixth place. Butterfield picked up a first-round pin against Living World Lutheran’s Lucas Riedel and took eighth place.
Florence’s Zeke Fritsch took home ninth place at 157 pounds.
The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday as they head to Kingsford for the Ray Mariucci Invitational.
