Lady Trojans hang on for win over Flivvers
KINGSFORD — All season long, Lady Trojans’ head coach Kim Bjork has been looking for her team to put together a complete game.
On Monday, the Forest Park girls varsity basketball team (4-6, 0-0) did just that as it went to Kingsford and snuck out with a 51-47 non-conference win over the Flivvers (5-5, 2-2).
“I thought we played really well as a team,” Lady Trojans’ head coach Kim Bjork said. “We had three girls in the higher double digit (points). That was great to see. That helped us.
“Defensively, we did a great job playing zone defense. We started out pressing and trying to create easy layups off turnovers. We did a great job in our halfcourt game. We moved the ball well, we had some good looks and we just played four-solid quarters. That’s what we’ve been talking about and we did it. I’m really proud of that.”
A 3-pointer and a layup from junior Elsie Willams helped Forest Park grab a 7-4 lead midway through the first quarter.
However, the lead wouldn’t last long as Taylor Olsen tied things with a 3-pointer from the left wing. Abby Przeslakowski added a layup off the steal and Alyvia Kowalski converted a deep mid range jumper, giving Kingsford a 13-9 advantage entering the second quarter.
The Lady Trojans opened the second on attack after allowing three free throws to Kowalski. Elsie Williams spent much of the frame on the bench after picking up her third foul. While that may have slowed Forest Park last season, things have changed.
“We have to play as a team,” Bjork said. “We lean on Elsie (Williams) a lot to handle the brunt of things at times. We need to be more of a team and let her play off of us a little bit. I think that was a really good thing for us to see like, ‘Alright, we can move the ball. We can work with each other.’ Aubrey (Waara-Shamion) made some key plays inside. Jessie Loehr got some big rebounds. When we’re getting 40 rebounds a game, that’s huge. Aubrey had 10 rebounds. … and she’s huge for a freshman. Those are big things. That’s when you see the girls stepping up.”
Kaidince Woollard hit a floater which Audrey Williams followed with a 3-pointer.
Aubrey Waara-Shamion pushed them ahead, 18-16, with two minutes left in the quarter.
Kingsford answered, but it entered halftime trailing 20-19.
Both team’s found their footing on offense in the second half, however, it was freshman Audrey Williams that shone the brightest.
She drilled back-to-back 3-pointers in the third quarter and Forest Park maintained its advantage, 39-35, entering the fourth.
“They’re focused in practice,” Bjork said. “We had a good practice on (Monday), talking about intensity, competitiveness and when things aren’t going great, you have to keep digging through. She’s a great shooter for us. I think when the pressure has gotten to her a bit, she gets less confident in her shot.
“Tonight, she hit some shots and that was a huge game for her. She’s a great offensive player and she’s a scrapper. She’s not the biggest person on the floor, but she’s going to scrap with anyone who steps up to her.”
Przeslakowski cut the Lady Trojans’ lead to one with a right-wing 3-pointer to open the final quarter. However, every time Kingsford would score, Forest Park had an answer. Audrey Williams made two more 3-pointers in the fourth to secure the 51-47 win.
While Audrey Williams made her presence felt on the scoreboard on Monday, she has also allowed junior Elsie Williams to focus on scoring instead of facilitating.
“That’s huge for us,” Bjork said. “It’s nice to have that point guard, who can look for that scorer, so we can have Elsie running off of screens and moving without the ball. Instead of trying to create for herself all the time.”
Kowalski led Kingsford in the contest with 16 points.
The Flivvers also received contributions from Przeslakowski (5 points, 2 steals), Addisyn Kriegl (1 assist, 1 rebound, 2 steals), Aubrie Moore (7 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), Olsen (3 points, 2 rebounds), Cassie Olson (12 points, 4 rebounds), Adelyn Normand (2 points) and Kailey Sundquist (2 points, 6 rebounds) and Karly Trevillian (2 rebounds).
Forest Park received contributions from Harper Anderson (1 rebound), Kaidince Woollard (3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), Audrey Williams (17 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals), Elsie Williams (13 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Lily Sarder (1 rebound, 1 steal), Loehr (2 points, 13 rebounds), Waara-Shamion (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Dalaney Wagner (2 assists, 1 rebound).
Forest Park heads to Powers on Friday to face the Jets while Kingsford is off until Tuesday when they welcome North Dickinson to town.
“I want to see us rebound like we did tonight,” Bjork said. “Rebounding is huge. I can’t say enough about how those girls rebounded inside, in that zone. I also want them to take care of the ball.
“Make smart decisions and let the game come to you.”
