Knights use early run to defeat Flivvers

NORWAY — Keyed by four 3-pointers, the Norway Knights girls basketball team went on a 14-0 run to finish the first quarter en route to a 46-35 victory over Kingsford in the second game of a boys-girls doubleheader Tuesday at Norway High School.

“(I’m) extremely happy with how the girls played,” Knights head coach Brian Adams said. “We were in a tough spot having to travel to Munising Monday night, the kids getting home late, and then turning around tonight to play this game.

“They responded and showed fight. If you’re gonna win you have to have fighters. They are showing that they are. We got off to a bad start this season and they are fighting their way back from it. That’s all you can ask for as a coach, I’m very proud.”

Jessa Rossler, Mary Cavagnetto, Lauren Adams and Paytan Carlson each buried a triple during a 3-minute stretch that saw the Knights turn a 5-4 deficit into a 16-5 lead.

Adams then hit two free throws with 16.5 remaining in the opening quarter to give Norway (5-7) early control of the game.

The Flivvers (5-7) pulled themselves back into the contest with a 10-0 burst to begin the second. Alyvia Kowalski started things with a putback and a free throw. Aubrie Moore followed with a 3-pointer off an assist by Anna Bortolini before Cassie Olson hit a short jumper and Kailey Sundquist sank a layup off her offensive rebound.

The Knights, who recorded only five turnovers in the first half against Kingsford’s 1-3-1 trapping zone defense in the game, committed three of those during the Flivvers’ run.

After Adams and Moore traded triples to leave Norway with a 21-18 edge, the Knights scored six straight to answer back. Carlson knocked in a 3-pointer, Kara Stanchina split two free throws and Adams sank a driving bank shot as Norway re-established control before the halftime break.

The Flivvers, who played without perimeter threat Abby Przeslakowski, continued to struggle from the 3-point arc against the Norway 2-3 zone in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Knights stayed hot from 3-point land with triples from Carlson and Cavagnetto before Adams scored two buckets in transition to lift the hosts to a 41-26 lead late in the third.

The Flivvers trailed by double-digits the rest of the game.

Adams led the Knights, who’ve won five of their last seven games, with 22 points.

Norway hurt Kingsford from the perimeter as Carlson sank three triples, Adams and Cavagnetto hit two each and Rossler added one.

The Flivvers were topped by Kowalski and Moore, who registered nine each. Sundquist scored seven and Cassie Olson finished with seven.

Kingsford sank six 3s in the game – Moore with three, Kowalski with two and Addisyn Kriegl with one.

The Flivvers look to end their three-game losing streak on Thursday when they host Forest Park (7-7). The Knights host North Central (0-12) in a Skyline Conference matchup on Thursday as well.
