IRON MOUNTAIN — Mountaineer Gym was teeming with anticipation on Thursday as the Iron Mountain varsity wrestling team welcomed Negaunee, Gladstone and Kingsford to town.

Kingsford and Iron Mountain didn’t square off on the mat, but it didn’t take away from the energy in the building as the Flivvers easily defeated the Braves, 66-6, and the Miners, 53-20.

“We had a good night back from Christmas break,” Kingsford head coach Darren Groleau said. “This was a lot of guys’ first match back since the Marquette challenge. We came out a little flat against Negaunee. They have some very good quality wrestlers that ranked in the top 10 in the state at the lighter weights. Our kids fought hard and competed. Once we got our bearings back our team settled in and started doing work.”

The Mountaineers battled but ended up falling to Gladstone, 57-6. Senior Daniel Manier picked up their lone win with a first-period pin against the Braves’ Deegan Miron at 157-pounds.

Kingsford won every contested match against Gladstone with Tyler Bray, Orrin Smith, Mason Tappy, Preston Declark, Pressley Hollen all picking up wins by pin. Max Wilson (forfeit win), Jake Lockhart (8-1 decision), Brayden Weber (forfeit win), Reed Degroot (forfeit win) and Tegan Ray (9-4 decision) also picked up wins.

“Tegan Ray had a nice win against fellow Division 3 ranked Connor Britton from Gladstone,” Groleau said. “We picked up intensity against Gladstone who’s been our biggest monkey on our backs for a while now. We wanted to go out there and make a statement. I definitely feel like we did that.”

While there were multiple highlights for the Flivvers, the biggest one came against Gladstone at 138-pounds for Ginger Majurin. She got caught in a headlock from the Braves’ Nick Proehl and appeared to be in trouble, then things changed.

“Ginger Majurin had the match of the night,” Groleau said. “She got caught in a deep headlock but was able to fight off of her back and get back to her fight. I think it made her mad and she went right to work on her takedown.”

With the takedown secured, Majurin quickly sealed the deal with a pin and sent the crowd into a frenzy.

“The bench and the crowd erupted after that match,” Groleau said.

Kingsford and Iron Mountain are in Escanaba today for the Elks Invitational.
