ISHPEMING — Still recovering from illness that made its way through the team, Kingsford secured seven new U.P. Finals qualifying times and downed Westwood in a swim meet Tuesday afternoon.

The Flivvers won all events except the girls 100 backstroke and diving, since KHS doesn’t dive.

“We were not at our best as some of the team is recovering from the virus that ran through,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said.

“The boy’s team for Westwood only has four kids so most of the time it was our boys racing against themselves. For the girls, they have around 12 so we just outnumbered them with 23 girls on our team, one of the largest girls team in the U.P.”

For the boys, senior Joey Lundholm (IMHS), junior Sam Lamirand and freshman Bryce Johnson (IMHS) all collected a pair of individual wins. Lundholm, already a U.P. qualifier, won the 200 IM (2:20.40) and 500 free (5:52.34). Lamirand, also already a qualifier, took the 100 (58.30) and the 200 free (2:19.88).

Johnson, with his U.P. times booked earlier, won the 100 butterfly (1:05.28) and 100 backstroke (1:05.37).

A new U.P. time came from junior Quinten Smith with his win in the 50 free (26.18).

On the girls’ side, freshman Allison Deuter won both individual events she swam, adding new U.P. times in the process. She took the 200 free in 2:16.05 and the 500 free in 6:05.24, both of those times the fastest for the Flivvers this season.

Deuter now has U.P. qualifying times in five individual events.

Senior Sierra Scott also added a new 500 free qualifying time (6:19.71) and won the 200 IM (2:35.44), an event she previously qualified in. Freshman Aubree Peterson was the 50 free winner Tuesday, with a U.P. time of 29.65.

Sophomore Ella McLean posted two wins, fastest in the 100 free and adding another U.P. time with her 1:06.63, and she took the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.18, an event she had previously qualified for.

Sophomore Mary Lundholm (IMHS) won the 100 fly (1:19.39), and junior Marley Dixon, primarily a freestyler, added another new U.P. time with a second in the 100 backstroke (1:20.22).

“We did get some really good performances,” Lindstrom noted. “The next few weeks will be the really challenging part of the schedule against some of the top teams in the U.P.”

The Flivvers head to Marquette Saturday, which is also the site of the U.P. Finals on Feb. 15.

Starting at $2.99/week.
