MARQUETTE — Kingsford played fairly even with Marquette for about two periods Thursday evening at Lakeview Arena. However, the Sentinels opened up the game in the third and cruised a 6-1 win in a Great Lakes Hockey Conference matchup.

“Our first period was good, and I thought our second was better,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “Structure-wise, I thought we outplayed them in the second. But we had some mistakes in the final period, and when you make mistakes against a team like that, they’re going to capitalize. They are a solid team.”

Senior captain Gavin Moore scored the Flivvers’ only goal at 13:23 of the second period to answer a first-period tally by Marquette.

Juniors Jake Deuter and Will Murvich collected assists on the score. Moore regained the team lead in scoring with the tally and now has 10 goals on the season.

But the Sentinels (11-7-0) regained the lead late in the second with a goal by Evan Mattila at 3:12 and then erupted for four more tallies in the third.

Junior Carter Beerling led Marquette with three points, scoring twice in the third period. Shots were even through two periods at 18-18, but the Sentinels held a 12-6 edge in the final stanza.

Junior Nate Scullon finished with 24 saves for Kingsford. Junior Parker Nevenhoven, who has a 1.64 goals against average this season, stopped 23 shots for Marquette.

“I was proud of how hard our guys played,” Wadge said.

The Flivvers, slipping to 6-10-0, return home next week hosting Manistique on Tuesday at Mountain View Ice Arena. Game night includes Kingsford’s annual “Pink the Rink” event, an opportunity for the community to come together in support of the fight against cancer, with proceeds from the fundraiser going to the Dickinson County Cancer Loan Closet.

Fans in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to the game, with a prize being awarded to the most “pinked out” fan. There will be raffle baskets, a sucker pull, and a candy guess jar for kids. A “Pink the Rink” game jersey will signed by the entire Flivver team and auctioned off. In addition, fans can make a donation and skate with the Flivvers following the game.

Organizers say the event has brought in several thousand dollars for the Loan Closet over the years. Puck drop for the game is 5:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
