Kingsford bounces back against Emeralds
IRON MOUNTAIN — Where there’s a Will, there’s a way.
Junior assistant captain Will Murvich rung up a second period hat trick and Kingsford cruised to a 5-2 victory over Manistique Monday evening in Great Lakes Conference hockey at Mountain View Ice Arena.
The Flivvers (4-7-0) trailed 1-0 after the first period but got things cooking in period two. Murvich stuffed home his first at 2:54, unassisted.
He ripped another through from the high slot at 9:24 with help from senior captain Gavin Moore, a score that put the Flivvers in front for good.
His third tally came at 15:47, which gave Kingsford a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
“He had a great game,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “I thought our guys played hard. Coming back – on the back check when they were on the rush, I thought guys like (Jake) Crockford and (Jaxon) Buckley were really good at getting back and helping out on D.
“I liked that offensively we had some good looks. Power play was good. Yeah, I was super happy with how we played. It was a good all around win.”
The Flivvers fired 47 shots to Manistique’s 14.
Moore snapped in his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 10:41 of the second, with an assist from sophomore Jack Spreen. The final Flivvers tally came at the end of the game, an empty-netter by Buckley after a feed from Moore.
Senior Carter LaVigne staked the Emeralds (2-9-1) to an early 1-0 lead at 5:34 of the first, getting one past junior Nate Scullon from down by the goaline. Junior Ajay Berger made it a 4-2 contest at 3:44 of the third.
Scullon registered the victory in net for Kingsford with 12 saves.
The Flivvers have now won two of their last three games after snapping a five-game losing skid.
Kingsford returns to action on Jan. 7, hosting Hancock (3-7-0) at 5:30 p.m. at Mountain View.
