Florence girls fall to Gillett
GILLETT, Wis. — Senior Kamdan Johnson posted another double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling in 14 rebounds on Monday for the Florence girls varsity basketball team in a non-conference road clash against Gillett on Monday in Gillett, Wis.
However, it wasn’t enough to push the LadyCats (5-4, 1-1) over the top and they fell 43-33 to the Tigers (8-1).
Johnson scored nine points in the first half while CeCe Mills and Kelsi Chrisman each kicked in four. However, Florence went into the locker room trailing the Tigers by two points.
Gillett used five second-half 3-pointers to pull away from the LadyCats and secure the win.
Florence ended the game 4 for 10 from the charity stripe while the Tigers went 12 for 18.
On top of leading the team in points and rebounds, Johnson also recorded an assist, a block and two steals.
Florence also received contributions from Mills (7 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist), Chrisman (5 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 steals, 1 block), Naomi Millan (4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals), Bryn Sullivan (3 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal), Miley VanDenHeuvel (2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist) and Abby Novak (1 rebounds, 1 steal).
The LadyCats are back home on Friday for a Northern Lakes Conference clash with Three Lakes.
LAKES 57, KNIGHTS 46
HOUGHTON — It was a jam-packed day of basketball in Houghton as multiple teams faced off in the Lakes Showcase at Michigan Technological University’s Student Development Center on Monday.
The Norway girls varsity basketball team (0-5) kicked off the day’s action against Lake Linden-Hubbell (6-0).
Despite battling until the final buzzer, the Knights ended up falling to the Lakes, 57-46.
Lake Linden-Hubbell opened the first quarter on a roll, scoring 13 points. During that span, Norway scored seven points.
Entering the second quarter trailing, the Knights began to battle back. Lauren Adams scored six points in the frame while Kara Stanchina and Peyton Paquette each scored two. The Knights outscored the Lakes 10-8 in the quarter and cut the lead to four entering halftime.
Adams continued scoring in the third, adding six points. Lila Kleikamp pitched in five points and Norway went into the fourth quarter trailing 40-30.
Paytan Carlson buried two 3-pointers in the final frame and Adams pitched in eight points. But it wasn’t enough to close the gap and the Lakes picked up the win.
Adams led Norway with 22 points.
The Knights also received contributions from Abby Richter (2 points), Carlson (6 points), Stanchina (2 points), Kleikamp (8 points) and Paquette (6 points).
Norway returns home on Tuesday against Iron Mountain.
PANTHERS 55, FLIVVERS 26
NEGAUNEE — The Kingsford girls varsity basketball team took its talents to Negaunee on Friday for the Irontown Holiday Bash.
Against stiff competition, the Flivvers held their own but ended the tournament with two losses. On Friday, they narrowly fell to Ludington, 40-37. They wrapped up tournament play on Saturday against Ewen-Trout Creek, losing 55-26.
Kingsford struggled to get out of the gates on Saturday and it scored three first-quarter points. During that span, Ewen-Trout Creek scored 15 points and took a sizeable lead into the second.
The Flivvers offense sorted things out in the second as Aubrie Moore, Kailey Sundquist and Cassie Olson each scored two points. However, the Panthers weren’t letting up and Kingsford went into halftime behind, 25-10.
In the third quarter, Kingsford doubled its production. Moore scored four, Sundquist added four and Anna Bortolini pitched in two points. Ewen-Trout Creek managed to match the Flivvers’ output, scoring 10 in the frame.
It was more of the same in the fourth. The Panthers held Kingsford to six points in the quarter while scoring 20 to secure the win.
Ewen-Trout Creek was 12 for 14 from the free throw line while the Flivvers went 4 for 10.
Moore and Sundquist led the way for Kingsford with six points apiece.
The Flivvers also received contributions from Alyvia Kowalski (3 points), Addy Kriegl (3 points), Bortolini (3 points), Jazzlynne Shaughnessy (2 points) and Olson (3 points).
It was a different story for Kingsford on Friday against Ludington.
Both teams scored seven first-quarter points but a strong second quarter allowed the Orioles to pull ahead 19-17 at halftime.
Kingsford struggled in the third, scoring five points. However, it came to life in the final frame as Kowalski scored seven points and Olson added five.
The run nearly put Kingsford ahead but the Orioles emerged victorious.
Kowalski led the Flivvers with 14 points in the game.
Kingsford also received contributions from Moore (7 points), Sundquist (2 points), Bortolini (6 points), Olson (6 points) and Karly Trevillian (2 points).
The Flivvers are headed to Marquette on Friday to face the Sentinels.
