Flivvers take home first place at Escanaba Elks Invite
ESCANABA — The Kingsford wrestling team’s dominant season continued on Saturday as it went to Escanaba for the Escanaba Elks Invitational.
With 23 teams competing, the Flivvers were in for a test. But they passed with flying colors as they took home first place.
“Our boys and one girl wrestled outstanding,” Kingsford head coach Darren Groleau said. “We were missing one of our better wrestlers, Max Sundquist, who was out with an illness. So that’s a testament to the hard work and talent this team has.”
As a team, the Flivvers had 10 of its 14 wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight class. Tegan Ray (132-pounds), Tyler Bray (150-pounds), Preston Declark (285-pounds) all took home first place finishes.
Ray went 4-0 at the tournament with three pins and a technical fall.
“Tegan Ray teched or pinned his way through the tournament,” Groleau said. “He had a rematch with (Gladstone’s) Connor Britton and ended up pinning him.”
Bray had a more difficult path to first place, as he had to face Iron Mountain’s Daniel Manier in the championship round.
“Tyler Bray was able to get some redemption against Daniel Manier winning 8-1 in the finals,” Groleau said. “Danny is tough as they come. He is very physical when he wrestles. Tyler wanted that rematch bad after Marquette. He controlled the whole match and got a statement win.”
Declark entered the tournament as the No. 6 seeded heavyweight. That didn’t slow him down in the slightest.
“Preston Declark had a big day,” Groleau said. “He knocked off the No. 3 seed, No. 2 seed and the No. 4 seed all by pins. He really showed up in a big way this weekend and I couldn’t be more proud of Preston. This has been the Preston I’ve been waiting for.”
Nolan Hendrickson (138-pounds) and Jake Lockhart (175-pounds) brought home second place finishes while Reed Degroot (126-pounds) took third. Ginger Marjurin (138-pounds), Orrin Smith (157-pounds), Brettin Rouse (190-pounds) and Mason Tappy (215-pounds) each finished in fourth place.
“Our whole lineup wrestled hard and did really well,” Groleau said.
While there was a lot to celebrate after a successful day of wrestling, Degroot also recorded his 100th career win during the tournament.
Kingsford heads to Crandon, Wis., on Thursday and then returns home on Saturday for the Ray Mariucci Invite.
IRON MOUNTAIN
After hosting a quad meet last week, the Mountaineers also made the trip to Escanaba on Saturday. They ended up with two placers.
Manier (150-pounds) ended up in second place, losing to Kingsford’s Bray in the championship round. Senior Giovannie Saldana (275-pounds) took home sixth place.
Manier pinned his way to the championship round. He pinned Manistique’s Hunter Salisbury and Escanaba’s Cannon Arnt in the first round. He also pinned Chase Swanson of Cheboygan in the second round.
NORWAY
Senior Landon Amundson (175-pounds) was the Knights’ lone placer in Escanaba. He ended the day in fourth place.
Amundson picked up pins against Rudyard’s Jackson Little and Negaunee’s Nicholas Beaudry.
