Flivvers gain experience ahead of UP Finals
MARQUETTE — The Kingsford High School swim team visited the location of February’s U.P. Finals Saturday, participating in a medal meet at Marquette Senior High School along with Marquette, Gladstone, Ishpeming/Westwood and Houghton.
With the focus on next month’s finals, the Flivvers continued to show improvements up and down the roster Saturday, with several swimmers competing in events they don’t normally swim.
“The team as a whole did really well. We had a lot of season and personal best swims today,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said.
The 50 freestyle was the only event Saturday eligible for U.P. Finals qualifying.
And the Flivvers added new qualifiers there. For the girls it was sophomore Ella McLean with a 29.46 and senior Petra Kaad at 29.87.
On the boys’ side junior David Arcand qualified at 27.02 and senior Alex Nieschulz at 27.03.
“Alex and David are second- year swimmers that have never swam before, and both are exceptional workers in practice every day,” Lindstrom said. “It is really great to see their hard work paying off.”
The Flivvers now have nine boys and nine girls qualified for the U.P. Finals, a number Lindstrom anticipates growing in the few weeks leading up to the finals.
Other top individual showings for the Flivvers on Saturday included freshman Allison Deuter taking second in both the 100 individual medley (1:08.17) and the 50 butterfly (28.92). McLean won the 50 breaststroke at 34.44, and senior Sierra Scott was third in the fly at 30.61.
Iron Mountain senior Joey Lundholm won the boys 100 IM in 1:02.04 and was second in the 50 butterfly at 25.71. Sophomore Thomas Gibbons took second in the 100 IM (1:06.25) and was third in the 50 breaststroke (32.25). Iron Mountain freshman Bryce Johnson turned in a second in the 50 backstroke (29.32), and junior Sam Lamirand was third in the same event at 29.66.
Marquette finished first in 12 of the 16 events, which included a sweep of diving and the four relay events.
The Flivvers return to action Thursday, hosting Rudyard at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool.
