Niagara girls dominate Carney Holiday Tourney

CARNEY — The holiday break allows teams to test them self in a tournament and that’s exactly what the Niagara girls varsity team did at the Carney Holiday Tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Badgers (6-4) kicked off the tournament with a 48-20 win over Superior Central on Friday. Then on Saturday, they took home the title by defeating Carney-Nadeau (4-3), 51-30, in Carney.

In the title game, Niagara jumped on the Wolves right away. Bristol Sanicki connected on two 3-pointers and Mallory Sanicki added another, giving the Lady Badgers a 15-2 lead after the first quarter.

Carney’s Grace Maule caught fire. She buried two 3-pointers and the Wolves out-scored Niagara, 9-6, in the second quarter. However, Carney still trailed 21-11 at halftime.

Maule made one 3-pointer in the third. Bristol Sanicki connected on two while Mallory Sanicki added another. Alivia Kleikamp added seven points in the frame and the Lady Badgers’ lead grew to 41-20 after three quarters.

Both teams scored 10 points in the final frame. Peyton Neuens-Allred led the way for Niagara in the fourth with six points. She was 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

As a team, the Lady Badgers made six 3-pointers and went 7 for 9 from the charity stripe. Carney-Nadeau was 5 for 7 from the line and made three 3-pointers.

Mallory Sanicki led all scorers in the contest with 18 points.

Niagara also received contributions from Bristol Sanicki (14 points), Neuens-Allred (6 points), Kleikamp (11 points) and Rachael Walker (2 points).

The Lady Badgers opened the tournament against Superior Central (2-3). Mallory Sanicki led the way for Niagara with 19 points. As a result, it easily blew past the Cougars.

Mallory Sanicki, Bristol Sanicki and Neuens-Allred each connected on a 3-pointer in the first half and the Lady Badgers took a 12-2 advantage into the second.

In the second quarter, Mallory Sanicki poured in nine points to out-score the entire Cougars’ squad. By halftime, the lead was up to 20 points, 25-5.

Sydney Swanson got in on the action in the third quarter, connecting on a 3-pointer. Bristol Sanicki pitched in two 3-pointers as well and Niagara held a 42-13 lead entering the fourth. The Lady Badgers only scored five points in the final frame. However, Superior Central couldn’t make things interesting as it fell to Niagara.

Niagara went 8 for 24 from the free throw line and made eight 3-pointers. The Lady Badgers also received contributions from Bristol Sanicki (11 points), Marley Jones (5 points), Neuens-Allred (5 points), Swanson (3 points), Kleikamp (1 point) and Walker (4 points).

Niagara returns to Marinette & Oconto Conference action on Friday against the Wolverines in Crivitz, Wis.
