Local wrestlers compete at Hodag Scramble
RHINELANDER, Wis. — Over the weekend, multiple area high school varsity wrestling teams made the trip to Rhinelander, Wis. for the Hodag Scramble.
With Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Florence and North Central in attendance the local grappling scene was well represented as Bobcats’ 190-pound senior Breyson Kelley and Jets’ 126-pounder Cooper Raab each taking home first-place finishes.
KINGSFORD
The Flivvers had two kids reach the championship match in their division, Reed DeGroot and Tegan Ray.
DeGroot, 126-pound division, picked up wins over Crandon’s Reid Votis (7-6 decision), Tomahawk’s Kenny Aleman (pin), Hayward/Northwood’s Eric Fish (15-0 technical fall) and Gladstone’s Cole Carlson (medical forfeit).
He reached the championship match and ended up falling to North Central’s Raab by a first-round pin.
In 132-pound action, Ray picked up wins over Merril’s Brett Suchocki (21-4 technical fall), Northwestern’s Ivan Woodhull (13-6 decision), Tomahawk’s Dane Islo (pin) and D.C. Everest’s Chris Dunow (pin). He lost to Marathon’s Cale Quaintance in the championship match by medical forfeit.
Kingsford’s Jacob Patrick took home eighth place in the 138-pound division. He picked up a win over Marathon’s Cameron Pestka (pin). He lost to D.C. Everest’s Josiah Beltran (pin), Northwestern’s Seth Cruz (pin) and Eau Claire North’s Jonah Berg (pin).
Brayden Weber, 120-pound, ended the day in 10th place for the Flivvers. He finished the day 2-3, picking up wins over Crandon’s Wyatt Houle (pin) and Tomahawk’s Aidan Collins (pin). He lost to Eau Claire North’s Andel Martinez in the ninth place match. He also lost to Blake Underwood of Marathon and Northwestern’s Adrian Leonard.
Kingsford had two wrestlers in the 285-pound division – Preston DeClark and Logan DeClark. Preston DeClark took home third place with a pin against Rosholt’s Magnus Hilgers. Logan DeClark ended the day in fifth place after pinning Lena’s Dylan Urbanek.
Brettin Rouse, 190-pound division, took home seventh place pinning Marathon’s Jace Ostrowski in under a minute.
Kingsford’s Izayah Reed ended the day in 16th place, falling to D.C. Everest’s Brayden Vang by medical forfeit.
IRON MOUNTAIN
Mountaineers’ 150-pounder Daniel Manier had the best finish on the day for the Black and Gold.
He took home fourth place after falling to Hayward/Northwood’s Trenton Kirkland in the third-place match. Manier was 3-2 on the day, picking up wins over Eau Claire North’s Izaiah Draeger (pin), Rhinelander’s Brayden King (pin) and Hayward/Northwood’s Nathaniel Meier (pin).
Senior Giovannie Saldana ended the day in ninth place, grabbing a win over D.C. Everest’s Aedan Xiong. He also beat Northwestern’s Henry Pooler (19-3 technical fall).
FLORENCE
The Bobcats had two wrestlers finish in the Top-5 for their divisions, Cole Chitko and Breyson Kelley.
Chitko took home fifth place in the 144-pound division. He picked up wins over Northwestern’s Logan Jones (pin), Hayward/Northwood’s Devonte’ Quagon (pin) and Ashland’s Justin DeFoe.
Kelley ended the day atop the 190-pound division. He was a perfect 5-0 on the day, grabbing wins over Kingsford’s Brettin Rouse, Merrill’s Carson Brooks, Rosholt’s Keegan O’Donnell, Spencer’s Sam Helgestad and D.C. Everest’s Niko Kleinschmidt.
Florence’s Ely Marefke took home 14th place in 150-pound action. Marefke picked up wins over Rhinelander’s Gage Anderson and Northwestern’s Wyatt Trzynka.
NORTH CENTRAL
The Jets had two wrestlers place at the Hodag Scramble – Raab and Miles Nehring.
Raab, first place at 126-pounds, ended the day at 5-0. He picked up wins over Lena’s Parker Boomsma, Tomahawk’s Keegan Jones, Spencer’s Gavin Andrew and DeGroot from Kingsford.
Nehring, 215-pound division, took home eighth place on the day. He was 2-3 on the day grabbing a forfeit win and a pin against D.C. Everest’s Aedan Xiong.
Florence is back in action on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh while Kingsford and Iron Mountain are off until Jan. 2 when they face off in Iron Mountain.
