Lady Badgers continue to climb M&O standing, topple Suring
NIAGARA, Wis. — With the holiday break looming, the Niagara girls varsity basketball team had one more Marinette & Oconto Conference game left before heading off for a week-long break.
The Lady Badgers didn’t let that affect their focus as they easily dispatched Suring, 56-34, on Friday in Niagara.
Niagara is now 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in conference play while the Eagles fall to 2-4 in M&O action and 4-4 overall.
The Lady Badgers opened the game on a roll as senior Mallory Sanicki connected on three 3-pointers in the first half. She scored 12 points in the frame while Bristol Sanicki pitched in six and Alivia Kleikamp added eight.
Suring couldn’t keep pace from deep and Niagara took a 27-23 lead into halftime.
The Lady Badgers turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, holding the Eagles to 11 points. Niagara scored 29 points in the final 18 minutes. Bristol Sanicki connected on two 3-pointers and Kleikamp scored nine points in the second half.
The Lady Badgers made eight 3-pointers in the game and went 8 for 18 from the free throw line. Suring made two 3-pointers and was 10 for 12 from the charity stripe.
Kleikamp led all scorers in the contest with 17 points. She 3 for 6 from the line.
Niagara also received contributions from Mallory Sanicki (16 points), Bristol Sanicki (12 points), Peyton Neuens-Allred (1 point), Sydney Swanson (7 points) and Rachael Walker (3 points).
The Eagles were led by Bunny Cramer (12 points) and Aliya Cox (10 points).
Niagara is back in action Friday at the Carney Holiday Tournament in Carney. The next game is on Jan. 3 against the Wolverines in Crivitz, Wis.
FLIVVERS 45, ESKYMOS 29
ESCANABA — Anna Bortolini and Cassie Olson each scored 12 points and the Kingsford girls varsity basketball team got back-to-back wins as they easily dispatched Escanaba (3-3, 0-1), 45-29, on Friday in a Great Northern UP Conference clash in Escanaba.
Freshman Aubrie Moore led the Flivvers (3-1, 1-1) with four points in the first quarter and they took a 12-11 lead into the second.
Moore added four points in the second while senior Kailey Sundquist scored three and Kingsford increased its lead to 21-19 at halftime.
The Flivvers held the Eskymos to five points in the third quarter. During that span, Alyvia Kowalski scored four points, Bortolini added two and Olson scored two increasing the lead to 29-24. It was over from there. Kingsford scored 16 points in the final eight minutes, holding Escanaba to five again, to secure the conference win.
The Eskymos finished a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line while Kingsford went 5 for 12.
Bortolini and Olson led all scorers in the contest.
The Flivvers also received contributions from Addisyn Kriegl (2 points), Moore (8 points), Kowalski (7 points), Sundquist (3 points) and Adelyn Normand (1 point).
Kingsford is in Negaunee on Friday for the Irontown Holiday Bash. It will face Ludington at 2 p.m. Central time.
