Kingsford swimming falls to the Sentinels
IRON MOUNTAIN — Kingsford’s co-op swim team qualified three more swimmers for the U.P. Finals in a meet against Marquette Thursday afternoon at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center pool.
The visitors claimed victory in the meet, with the Marquette boys winning 110-57, and the girls topping Kingsford 97-73.
Kingsford’s newest U.P. qualifying times came from senior Petra Kaad who was fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:27.70. Junior Quinten Smith qualified with a fourth-place in the 50 free, with a time of 26.06, and Norway sophomore Eli Dube hit the U.P. threshold with a fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.78.
“We now have eight of our 13 boys qualified for the finals just three meets into the season,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “The girls have 9 of 22, and we have more that are getting close.”
Individual winners for Kingsford Thursday included Iron Mountain senior Joey Lindholm with a 2:14.83 in the 200 IM and a 58.49 in the 100 butterfly, senior Sierra Scott in the 100 butterfly (1:10.67), freshman Allison Deuter in the 50 free (27.35), sophomore Olivia Sage in the 100 backstroke (1:17.94), Iron Mountain freshman Bryce Johnson in the boys 100 back (1:05.92), and sophomore Ella McLean in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.48).
A couple other of the top individual swims for Kingsford came from junior Sam Lamirand, who was second in the 100 free (57.31) and third in the 50 free (25.38), sophomore Thomas Gibbons with a third in the 200 IM (2:32.06), and Deuter, who was just about three tenths of a second from first in the 100 free (59.60).
The Flivvers had one relay win against Marquette, with the girls squad of Scott, McLean, freshman Aubree Peterson and Deuter claiming the 200 free in 1:53.22 in an exciting finish as Deuter overtook Marquette anchor Natalie Loralei with about 15 yards to swim for a close victory of less than a second.
“The boys and girls team did very well against a well-coached veteran team in Marquette,” Lindstrom noted.
“Again we had many of the lowest times for the year, and overall I was pleased with the performance considering that was our second meet in three days.”
Up next for Kingsford is another home meet, hosting Ishpeming Tuesday at 4 p.m. at NLYMCA Dickinson Center.
