IRON MOUNTAIN — The Kingsford High School swim team posted another strong performance Tuesday afternoon at Manistique High School, producing the most points on both the boys and girls score sheets in a meet against the Emeralds and Gladstone.

Scored as a double dual, the Flivvers won 10 individual and five relays in the 24-event meet. The Flivvers saw many time improvements at the meet, despite the pool at Manistique not having starting blocks — meaning the swimmers started off the wall.

“The meet was a bit of a pleasant surprise to the coaching staff,” Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “Getting time improvements this time of year off of wall starts is a bit unusual.”

Some of those improvements came from junior David Arcand who dropped nearly 10 seconds to post a U.P. qualifying time 100 butterfly (1:18.30) for third place.

Senior Sierra Scott swam a qualifying time in the 200 freestyle, winning the first time she swam it this year with a time of 2:25.52. Senior Joey Lundholm qualified his first time this year in the 100 free, winning the event in 56.53.

Sophomore Olivia Sage also qualified in the hundred back the first time she swam it this year with a second place effort in 1:18.84.

Sophomore Thomas Gibbons and freshman Allison Deuter claimed two individual wins for the Flivvers.

Gibbons won the 200 IM (2:35.84) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.28), while Deuter triumphed in the 50 free (28.38) and the 100 backstroke (1:11.69).

“Some of the highlights of the day came from the four freshmen we have this year that came from the Northern Lights YMCA swim team,” Lindstrom said.

“Every year Coach Amiee Tatangelo and her staff send us some incredible swimmers,” Lindstrom added. “This year is no different. Aubree Peterson, Deuter, and Gianna Novara, have been tearing it up for the girls team. Aubree swam an incredible 500 free in her first try at the high school level. Allison has yet to lose a race. She has three qualifying swims in three different events: 50 and 100 free and the 100 back, and Bryce Johnson has been exceptional winning the 100 fly and qualifying in the 200 IM.”

Johnson’s winning 100 fly time was 1:11.35, and he was third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:38.37. Peterson swam to first in the 500 free, clocking 6:33.26.

Sophomore Ella McLean won the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.69 and senior Petra Kaad took the 100 free in 1:11.60.

“There has been so much improvement from the whole team this year it has been fun to watch,” Lindstrom said.
