BAY CITY — It just wasn’t enough Jake.

Seniors Jake Powell, Jake Crockford and junior Jake Deuter all scored for Kingsford, but the Flivvers dropped a 6-3 decision to Birmingham Unified in a non-conference varsity hockey contest at the Bay City Showcase Friday afternoon at the Bay County Civic Arena.

It was the fourth straight loss for the Flivvers, who slipped to 2-5-0 on the season.

“I thought our guys worked hard and controlled the play for the most part,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “We had a ton of opportunities and a ton of rebounds that we didn’t capitalize on. But I was happy, for the most part, with how we played.”

Tied 1-1 after one and knotted again 2-2 in the second, Birmingham took advantage of a five-minute major penalty for checking from behind called against senior Jaxon Buckley late in the second period, scoring two power play goals in a less than two-minute span to take control of the game.

“That hurt us,” Wadge said. “It was a penalty for sure, but I don’t know that it was a five minuter.”

Deuter’s goal, a putback following a shot by senior captain Gavin Moore on a power play at 4:04 of the third period, helped Kingsford claw to within one at 4-3, but the Kings responded with another quick multi-goal spurt, scoring twice in 23 seconds just minutes after the Deuter tally.

Senior Chase Hamlin recorded a hat trick for Birmingham.

He opened the scoring in the game at 5:24 of the first. He also had the first of the two power play goals during the major penalty at 13:34 of the second, and he capped the scoring with his third at 6:15 of the third.

Powell’s goal tied the game 1-1 with a few minutes to go in the first, on a redirect of a shot by freshman Carter Steber. Crockford’s goal made 2-2 at 4:31 in period two. Deuter and junior Will Murvich contributed assists on that one.

No shot total was provided on the scoresheet, but Kingsford seemed to have the advantage there. Junior Nate Scullon suffered the loss in net for Kingsford.

The Flivvers have now allowed five or more goals in each of the past four games.

Kingsford has a quick turnaround as it looks to right the ship, facing off against St. Clair this morning at the showcase.

The Flivvers return to home ice Tuesday, hosting Lakeland (Wis.) at 5:30 p.m. at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Starting at $2.99/week.
