Florence wrestling takes home medals
CRANDON, Wis. — After a rough start to its season, the Florence varsity wrestling team found success last week.
The Bobcats sent three wrestlers to the Westwood JV Invite on Friday and took home two first places. Then, on Saturday, they made the trip to Crandon, Wis., for the Rebels Invite and took home two podium finishes.
At the Westwood JV Invite, Florence’s Ely Marefke and Mason Butterfield each took home first place in their weight bracket.
Wrestling at 150-pounds, Marefke picked up wins over Westwood’s Ryan Juhola (pin), Gaylord’s Kyle Speaks (major decision, 13-2) and Comstock Park’s Jacob Juarez (pin).
Butterfield picked up wins over Escanaba’s Linkoln Chenier and Gwinn’s Michael Brady in 157-pound action.
Zeke Fritsch ended the tournament in fourth place.
In Crandon, senior Breyson Kelley took home second place at 190-pounds. He fell to Two Rivers’ Max Matthias in the championship round. He was 3-1 on the day with wins over Wausau West’s Blake Bever, Menominee Nation’s Mitchell Waukau and Bryson Schimd of Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
“Mathias is one of the most athletic wrestlers I’ve seen wrestle,” Florence head coach Ed Kelley said. “Mathias is being recruited by Division 1 colleges.”
Florence’s Cole Chitko ended the day in third place at 144-pounds. He picked up wins over Ethan Strasser of Wausau West and Taylor Brown from Gillett/Suring before falling to Nolan Anzia, Cedar Grove-Belgium, in the semifinals. He secured third place with a win over Tomahawk’s Fletcher Baumann.
The Bobcats head to Rhinelander on Friday for the Hodag Scramble.
