FLORENCE, Wis. — After dropping back-to-back road games, the Florence boys varsity basketball team returned to Florence, Wis., on Tuesday looking to get back on track.

The Bobcats (2-2) accomplished that task as they easily dispatched Oneida Nation (2-3), 51-34 in a non-conference clash.

“Happy with a win,” Florence head coach Bryan Bomberg said. “I thought overall it was a sloppy game with not a lot of flow — too many interruptions. We have to be tougher on the boards, limit our unforced turnovers and move the ball better. I like our future though. There were bright spots and a lot of teaching moments.”

Truth Setner led the way for the Bobcats in the first half. He connected on two 3-point shots and tallied nine points in the frame. As a team, they connected on three 3-pointers and scored 26 points while holding the Thunderhawks to 16 points.

After halftime, Caleb Baker took over for Florence. He scored 10 points in the second half while Bradly Steber pitched in seven.

Oneida Nation tried to respond, but it couldn’t keep pace with the Bobcats. The Thunderhawks were outscored 25-to-18 in the second half.

As a team, Florence went 3 for 9 from the charity stripe while shooting 4 for 14 from beyond the arc. It was 22 for 52 from the floor. The Thunderhawks went 7 for 20 from the free throw line.

Baker led the Bobcats with 14 points. He also recorded 10 rebounds and a steal.

Florence also received contributions from Setner (13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals), Steber (12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals), Mason Koski (6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Carson Chrisman (6 points, 1 rebound, 3 steals), Ashton Haberkorn (1 rebound), Carter Reed (4 rebounds), Ely Marefke (1 rebound) and Logan Koski (4 rebounds).

The Bobcats are off until Dec. 27 when they head to Reedsville, Wis., for the Reedsville Holiday Tournament.

They face Cedar Grove at 5 p.m.

FLIVVERS 75, WYKONS 33

IRON RIVER — The Kingsford boys basketball team’s hot start continued on Tuesday.

The Flivvers went to Iron River to face West Iron County and emerged with a 75-33 non-conference victory.

“Overall, it was a pretty good night for Kingsford basketball,” Kingsford head coach Ben Olsen said. “Coming into this game we wanted to focus on certain aspects and get better at certain aspects of our offense and defense which we did. Our focus throughout the game was there and we are continuing to become a more disciplined basketball team.

The Flivvers are now 5-0 on the season. However, they aren’t letting that success take them out of their game.

“Coming into games like this it’s easy to lose focus and get away from who you are and what your identity is,” Olsen said. However, we did a really good job getting this win doing it within our offensive and defensive identity.”

Kingsford came out of the gates and shut down the Wykons’ offense, holding them to six points in the first. Senior Gavin Grondin pitched in six points and junior Owen Olkkonen added nine allowing the Flivvers to take a 25-6 lead into the second.

West Iron found a bit of a rhythm before halftime. But it couldn’t slow down Kingsford as Morgan Sleik poured in 10 second-quarter points, giving it a 46-15 advantage at half.

“We have been focusing a lot on shot selection and trying to take better shots within our system,” Olsen said. “Overall, I thought we did a really good job and cleaned up a lot of issues we have had during the previous four games. We are seeing in our film sessions that when we take good shots they tend to go in.”

The Flivvers didn’t let up in the second half, scoring 29 points between the final two quarters. They also held the Wykons to 18 points during that stretch.

Grondin led all scorers in the contest with 18 points.

Kingsford also received contributions from Olkkonen (11 points), Sid Olson (6 points), Jack Kriegl (7 points), Gavin Trevillian (2 points), Sleik (14 points), Jett Buckley (6 points), Gaige Sorenson (2 points) and Alexander Erickson (4 points).

West Iron’s best quarter was the fourth. Senior Elijah Oberlin led the way in the frame with seven points. He finished with 17.

The Wykons also received contributions from Abel Lundin (3 points), Jessiah Smith (11 points) and Nathan Camps (2 points).

Kingsford heads downstate on Friday for the first annual Elk Rapids Invitational. It faces Elk Rapids at 7 p.m. EST.

“Overall, I am very happy with where we are at a quarter into the season,” Olsen said. “This weekend will tell us a lot more about our team.
