Trojans looking for first trip to Superior Dome since 2017

IRON MOUNTAIN — After avenging its only loss of the season against North Central, the Forest Park 8-player varsity football team finds itself one win away from securing a spot in the MHSAA 8-player Division 2 state finals.

But, before they can make the trip to the Superior Dome at Northern Michigan University the Trojans have to deal with Onekama (10-1) today at noon at Dick Mettlach Field.

The Portagers are bringing a nine-game win streak to Crystal Falls. That streak has been powered by an offense that is averaging 32 points a game.

“They spread the ball around a lot,” FP head coach Brian Fabbri said. “Nothing fancy. There’s not one all-star athlete we have to defend. They have multiple athletes and multiple looks, and they spread the ball around. I’ve seen them have up to four different quarterbacks in the backfield. They’re a team that plays good football. There’s not anything you can key on. You just have to do everyone do their assignments to try and contain them.”

On the defensive side of things, Onekama is giving up 17 points per contest on average. Instead of running fancy defenses, Fabbri said the Portagers are more reliant on size.

“They have good size, probably the biggest team we’ve seen all year, with multiple guys in the 200 pound range,” Fabbri said.

While Onekama’s numbers are impressive, they pale in comparison to the Trojans’ offense. Through 11 games, Forest Park is averaging 48 points per game while holding opponents to 13 points per game.

Sophomore running back Dax Huuki has been leading the charge for the Trojans. Through 11 games, he has carried the ball 121 times for 1,267 yards and 18 touchdowns. But he’s not alone. Senior Grayson Sundell has helped balance out Forest Park’s attack. So far he has carried the ball 75 times for 832 yards and 15 TDs.

Vic Giuliani has also added four rushing TDs to the board for the Trojans. However, his biggest impact has been through the air. Through 11 games, Giuliani has completed 35 of 63 passes for 14 TDs and 886 yards.

Although ending the regular season at 9-0 was in the Trojans’ plans, Fabbri is looking at their loss to North Central on Oct. 25 as a blessing in disguise.

“It has really helped us refocus,” Fabbri said. “It brought me back down to earth. I was thinking big there for a while. From the players to the coaching staff, it leveled us out and made us realize we’re not invincible. We have to play a good football game to keep advancing.”

If Forest Park can take care of business against Onekama, it will secure the Trojans’ first trip to the Superior Dome since 2017. However, they’re focused solely on what’s in front of them.

“There’s no looking ahead,” Fabbri said. “There’s no talking about the other two teams on the other side of the bracket, because if you don’t prepare for what’s in front of you, as we found out in week nine, you can get beat real easily, and this time, there would be no second chance. If we drop one now, there’s no there’s no tomorrow.”
