Flivvers kick off swimming season

ISHPEMING — The Kingsford co-ed varsity swimming team kicked off its 2024-25 campaign on Saturday at the Westwood Relays.

Competing against Houghton, Gladstone, Ishpeming-Negaunee, and Westwood, the Flivvers’ girls team took home wins in five out of seven events. The boys’ squad was victorious in three of seven events.

“This is our first meet of the year and it is a good one for our new swimmers to get acquainted with high school swimming,” Kingsford head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “It was a good day for the team all around, we had 33 swimmers compete and all 33 came home with a medal, many of them with more than one.

The Flivvers’ girls took home wins in the 200-medley (Olivia Sage, Ella McLean, Sierra Scott and Allison Deuter), the 400-freestyle (Mary Lundholm, Gianna Novara, Elena Nelson and Marley Dixon), the 200-fly (Scott, Lundholm, Aubree Peterson and Deuter), the 200-freestyle (Jocelyn Lindbeck, Anuk Sabarter, Jade Walcenbach and Myah Gilroy) and the 400-medley (Scott, Sage, Peterson and Deuter).

They also took home third in the 200-meter backstroke (Clara Anderson, Olivia Brooks, Marisa Pipp and Emma Dube) and second in the 200-meter breaststroke (Emma Strom, Iona Shiltop, Aubree Peterson and McLean).

The Kingsford boys took home wins in the 200 medley (Sam Lamirand, Thomas Gibbons, Joey Lundholm and Quinten Smith), the 400 freestyle (Smith, David Arcand, Bryce Johnson and Lamirand) and the 200 freestyle (Gibbons, Arcand, Johnson and Joey Lundholm).

They also took home second in the 200 backstroke (Daniel Arcand, Alex Nieschulz, Justin Larson and Eli Dube), second in the 200 fly stroke (Gibbons, David Arcand, Johnson and Joey Lundholm), third in the 500 freestyle (Kylin Werner, Isaac Nelson, Johnson and Eli Dube).

In the mixed races, Kingsford took third (Christina Fraker, Daniel Arcand, Maddie McKinnon and Eli Dube) and second (Quinten Smith, Elena Nelson, Lamirand, Dixon) in the 500-meter freestyle.

“The team is ahead of schedule from last year with many of our kids that were new last year are really coming on,” Lindstrom said. “The next meet at Houghton will be a real test for them as Coach Eric Johnson always has his team well prepared.”

The Flivvers are in Houghton on Tuesday.
