IRON MOUNTAIN — Behind a two-goal effort from senior defenseman Evan Moyer, the Kingsford Flivvers quickly erased the sting of opening-night blowout loss with a 4-1 victory over Negaunee in Great Lakes Hockey Conference action Thursday evening at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Seniors Gavin Moore and Cooper Pigeon also scored for the Flivvers (1-1-0), the two reversing roles on offense and defense as part of an up and down shake-up to the lineup in an effort to ignite a spark.

“Good effort, from goaltending all the way out,” Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge said. “Everybody played some good minutes. Moving Gav back on (defense) was key, and Cooper had a good game up front, I thought he did really well. He had some good looks. Yeah, it was good all the way around.”

Negaunee (1-2-0) hit the scoreboard first with a goal by senior Aydan Miles just three minutes and 46 seconds into the game, with senior defenseman Lucas Reamer assisting. It was the first goal of the season for Miles, who led the league with 36 tallies last season.

Rather than buckle after falling behind as they did in Tuesday’s loss to Escanaba, the Flivvers seemed to up their intensity. Moore provided a quick equalizer, scoring unassisted about a minute following the Miles goal. That score prompted the annual Teddy Bear Toss for charity, with fans in attendance chucking stuffed animals onto the ice to be donated to local emergency responders and crisis centers.

The Flivvers went into the first intermission with a lead after Moyer connected from the blue line on a power play late in the first frame. Senior Jake Crockford and junior Will Murvich assisted.

Negaunee did what they could to match the Flivvers’ physical, fast-paced effort, the teams combining for 14 penalties, but Kingsford carried the play overall, especially as the game progressed into the final period.

Moyer’s second goal, an unassisted score, extended Kingsford’s lead to 3-1 at 13:37 of the second, and Pigeon added some insurance at 7:22 of the third, getting the puck past Miners junior netminder Miles Ketola amidst a traffic jam in front of the net. Crockford and sophomore Jonah Doenier added assists on Pigeon’s tally.

Kingsford junior goalie Nate Scullon provided a solid showing, denying Negaunee after the early goal and finishing with 17 saves.

“He played a great game,” Wadge said. “He had some nice saves, and he made some big ones for sure. It was good. I was super pleased with how we did.”

The Flivvers remain home next week, hosting Mosinee in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The team was scheduled to participate in a tournament at Sault Ste. Marie next weekend, but that has been scratched. Instead, Kingsford is looking to possibly pick up a pair of games the following weekend.

Starting at $2.99/week.
