Kingsford dominates in win over Maroons
KINGSFORD — After a strong start to its season, the Kingsford girls varsity tennis team is rolling right along after defeating Menominee on Tuesday at Kingsford High School.
Despite battling the wind and a slow start, the Flivvers found their rhythm and picked up a 6-2 victory over the Maroons.
“Yesterday’s weather issue was the wind,” Kingsford head coach Tracy Rutter said. “The girls all started out ‘flat’ but seemed to get into the groove and ended up with a great ending. We had several matches that resulted in a third set tie break.”
In singles flights, Kingsford dropped one match, No. 4 singles. Flivvers’ Maddy Zeuske battled to a third set, but ultimately lost to Lexi Marineau, 6-4, 5-7, 6-10.
Aubrie Moore dominated the Maroons’ Elena Murphy in the No. 1 singles flight, 6-4, 6-0.
“(Moore) continues to improve with each match,” Rutter said. “Being a freshman is a lot of pressure in the spot she is in, but she handles it very well.”
Abby Przeslakowski was pushed to three sets by Menominee’s Mackenzie Doyle, however, Przeslakowski picked up a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win in No. 2 singles.
Kingsford’s Aubrey Phillips was victorious in the No. 3 singles flight, beating Delaney Wagner, 6-4, 7-5.
The Flivvers continued their dominance in the doubles flights. Menominee’s lone match win came in No. 3 doubles with Menominee’s Lily Kamin and Zoey Frazer defeating Adyson Shogren and Reagan Cram, 6-3, 1-6 , 10-5.
No. 1 doubles, Audrey Veale and Libby Vross rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Menominee’s Ella Barker and Ava Chouinard.
“No. 1 doubles continue to play great,” Rutter said. “The best thing about the two of them is how much fun they have together. I can’t imagine them playing without each other, to finish how they started their senior year is bittersweet.”
In No. 2 doubles, Kingsford’s Addy Kriegl and Eden Janousek beat Anna Marsicek and Bianca Kurtz, 6-6 (7), 6-2. The Flivvers overcame adversity in No. 4 doubles with Madalynn Sleik and Addison Paternoster defeating Emily Schuettpelz, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5.
“Doubles are all staying pretty consistent, we need to work on communicating a little better and being in the right spot,” Rutter said. “I think if we fine tune a few things, they will be set up well for the bigger matches we have coming up.”
Kingsford is back in action on Tuesday as it heads to Negaunee for a 3 p.m. match.
