IRON MOUNTAIN — After beating Negaunee over the weekend, the Iron Mountain boys varsity soccer team went to battle with Three Lakes at Mountaineer Stadium on Monday.

When the dust had settled, the Mountaineers (4-5-2) emerged victorious over the Bluejays 7-4.

“First thing, it was senior night and the cool thing was, we had seven goals on the scoreboard and all seven were scored by seniors,” IM coach Greg Kulas said. “So that’s kind of cool. You don’t expect that to happen on senior night, but it did.”

For senior Matt Richer, senior night has a bittersweet taste.

“It’s high emotions, it’s nice to be ending on a good note, but it’s not nice to be ending at all,” Richer said. “If I could keep playing for years I would. But, I’m just happy we ended it how we did.”

Even though his seniors finished the goals, Kulas was proud of how his team performed.

“All in all, the team played really hard, played really well,” Kulas added. “That’s a quality opponent we played. They were really good last time we played them, and they were really good again tonight. We had to fight for everything.”

Senior Alex Wilson kicked off the scoring after taking a pass from Anthony Pineda and juking the Three Lakes’ goalkeeper. With the keeper reeling, Wilson found a home for his shot to put Iron Mountain ahead 1-0 less than three minutes into the game.

“Alex Wilson, he had four goals in a night, I mean that’s crazy,” Richer said. “I was happy to see him, even after he went out, he came back in, cramped up, and he still scored again. It was nice to see him playing like that.”

A few minutes later, the Bluejays snuck a shot past Tyler Winch to tie the game at 1-all.

But, Wilson wasn’t done.

Later on in the first half, in a :45 second span, he netted two goals as the Mountaineers pulled ahead 3-1.

Despite falling behind early, Three Lakes kept the pressure on Iron Mountain. It paid off and the Bluejays netted a penalty kick to make it 3-2 heading into halftime.

Once play resumed in the second half, Three Lakes’ Tobias Volkmann drilled his second penalty kick and tied the game at 3-all.

A few minutes later, Richer plowed his way through the Bluejays defenders and sent the ball into the net to give the Mountaineers a 4-3 lead.

Iron Mountain wasn’t done just yet, as Reece Kangas took a Wilson pass and extended the lead to two a few minutes later.

Three Lakes cut the lead to one late in the second half, but it didn’t matter as Wilson and Kangas each added another goal to seal the game for Iron Mountain.

“There were places where it was spotty, our defense, we let some things through that we shouldn’t have,” Richer said. “But overall, I think we moved the ball really well, provided a good offensive presence, I mean that was the most goals we’ve scored all year in a single game.

“Actually, I think that was the most goals we’ve scored since I’ve been playing high school soccer in a single game. It was nice being out there with that group of guys. We all worked really well together and I think that was probably the best game we’ve played all year.”

While the team worked out some of its on-field issues, Kulas believes his players are growing in all aspects of the game.

“I think we’re getting better about maintaining our composure,” Kulas said. “One of the cool things after the Negaunee game was their coach came over and complimented me on our team’s sportsmanship, which to me was worth the whole trip.”

The Mountaineers finish their regular season schedule on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Marinette, Wisconsin.
