Properly secure kids, pets when riding in vehicles

National Kids and Pets Day is an opportunity to celebrate the love shared with children and furry friends.

Yet it is also a critical reminder of the dangers they can face in vehicles, particularly as families prepare to drive for spring or summer vacations, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group.

“It’s our responsibility to protect those who rely on us,” Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group, said in a news release. “Never leave kids or pets in a hot car, even for a moment, and always ensure they are properly restrained during a drive. Simple precautions can prevent tragic outcomes and save lives.”

According to the National Digital Car Seat Check Form database, of the car seats inspected in 2023, 74% were not used properly or incorrectly installed. Additionally, 25% of children move to booster seats too soon and 93.6% transition to a seat belt too soon.

AAA offers this advice on:

Child seats

— Find the right car seat. Types of seats vary based on children’s age, weight and height. For more, go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/right-seat.

— Install the car seat correctly. Review instructions and video tutorials.

— Get the car seat inspected. To find a car seat inspection provider, go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats#installation-help-inspection.

— Ensure safety belts fit properly every time. The placement of the safety harness or seat belt can be critical.

— Register the car seat to receive recall notices and safety updates.

Traveling with pets

Traveling with pets can be a rewarding experience, but it is important to plan ahead to ensure their comfort and safety. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and pack favorite toys or blankets to keep them relaxed during the journey. Frequent breaks for exercise and bathroom needs are essential, especially on long trips. Most importantly, always ensure the pet is properly secured during a drive to prevent distractions and keep everyone safe in case of sudden stops or accidents.

— Never in the front seat: Avoid letting dogs ride in the front seat, especially if airbags are equipped, as they can be seriously injured in a crash.

— Crates: Crates are the safest option, especially for large dogs, as they can be securely anchored in the back seat or cargo area.

— Harnesses and seat belts: If a crate is not possible, a pet harness and seatbelt can be used but make sure they are properly designed and tested for pet safety.

— Back seat or cargo area: The back seat or cargo area is the safest place for dogs, as it is further away from airbags and less likely to be a distraction while driving.
