Voting in Wisconsin? Make sure to have proper ID at the polls

Are you a Wisconsin resident eligible to vote in the non-partisan spring elections that take place a week from today?

Better make sure you have the proper ID to show at the polls, the Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles advises.

While Wisconsin requires certain forms of identification to cast a ballot, the state does not have a separate “voter ID,” nor is a federally compliant REAL ID needed to vote.

These are what’s listed on the Wisconsin Elections Commission website, https://elections.wi.gov/, as acceptable forms of ID and can be unexpired or expired after the last general election Nov. 5, 2024:

— A Wisconsin DOT-issued driver license, even if driving privileges are revoked or suspended, with or without a star in the right-hand corner;

— A Wisconsin DOT-issued identification card, with or without a star in the right-hand corner;

— A Wisconsin DOT-issued identification card or driver license without a photo issued under the religious exemption;

— Military ID card issued by a U.S. uniformed service;

— A U.S. passport;

— An identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin, which can be used even if expired before the most recent general election last November;

— A photo identification card issued by a Wisconsin-accredited university or college that contains date of issuance, signature of student and an expiration date no later than two years after date of issuance; if the university or college ID is expired, the student ID must be accompanied by a separate document that proves current enrollment.

These also can be used but must not be expired:

— A veteran’s photo identification card issued by the Veterans Health Administration of the federal Department of Veterans Affairs;

— A certificate of naturalization issued not earlier than two years before the date of an election at which it is presented;

— A driving receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT, which is valid for 45 days;

— An identification card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT, also valid for 45 days; and

— A temporary identification card receipt issued by Wisconsin DOT through the Identification Petition Process, which is valid for 60 days.

Don’t have any of those? The DMV provides these steps to obtain an ID to show at the polls.

The place to begin is on the DMV’s website at wisconsindmv.gov/idcards. This site has a list of the required documents in order to obtain identification at a DMV Customer Service Center to show at the polls. Appointments are available but not required.

A process also is available to U.S. citizens, free of charge, to obtain a receipt valid to take to the polls for voting if the ID card is not available in time.

DMV’s toll-free hotline at 844-588-1069 is available for questions on obtaining an ID. Questions regarding voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election information may be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission website, https://elections.wi.gov/.

In a related matter, Tuesday’s ballot has a question that would add a voter identification requirement to the state’s Constitution.

The ballot language is: “Shall section 1m of article III of the constitution be created to require that voters present valid photographic identification verifying their identity in order to vote in any election, subject to exceptions which may be established by law?”

Under a 2011 state law, Wisconsin voters already have to present an acceptable form of photo ID, according to a Wisconsin Public Radio story. But, if it’s approved by a majority of voters this spring, a constitutional provision would help cement that requirement and protect it against future legal challenges.

Starting at $2.99/week.
