Political lies and ‘family values’

Between Mona Charen and Letters to the Editor, Tuesday’s Opinion page managed to blast Trump supporters as a flock of deviants or liars.

Mona Charen says Trump’s and Vance’s lies about the 2020 election caused the deaths of five people on Jan. 6. Fact check: Four were Trump supporters — one shot by a Capitol police officer and three from other problems. One Capitol Police officer had two strokes several hours later and died the next day.

Charen somehow blesses Tim Walz’s history of lies and exaggerations as unimportant, and claims that Trump’s COVID-19 policies led to the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of Americans. As of Sept. 7, 2024, there have been 746,619 U.S. COVID-related deaths under Biden vs. 455,563 during Trump’s administration.

With regard to past marital behavior/improprieties, the media will not touch Kamala Harris’s quite shaded California past. Harris supporters ought not to be trumpeting “family values.”

Expiration of the Trump tax cuts will raise taxes for everyone. They did not only benefit billionaires.Trump strengthened NATO by making all members pay their dues. Trump wants the war in Ukraine brought to an end. There is no current plan on the table to do that, just to keep shipping American money and arms over there.

Trump and his supporters favor legal, vetted immigration and a defined path to eventual citizenship. That is not what we’ve had for the last four years. Migrant crime is real in many cities — caused by open borders and unvetted relocation of some criminals and gang members.

Many Trump supporters are just practical — look at the last eight years, and then pick the best four.
