Elmer Alexanderson

NORWAY — Elmer Gustaf Alexanderson, 102, of Norway, passed away Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1923, in Norway, the son of the late Nels and Wilmont (O’Blenes) Alexanderson.

Elmer graduated from Norway High School in 1940.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-45. He was in the 836 Engineer Aviation Battalion, South Pacific Theater, where they built and repaired airstrips on numerous islands, including the Philippines and spent time in Japan also.

After the war he worked at the A&P grocery store in Norway, where he met the love of his life, Julia Thaler.

Elmer married Julia Thaler on July 5, 1947, in Roscommon, Mich. She preceded him in death on Nov. 6, 2012.

Elmer worked as a salesman for over 40 years at Anderson Motors and Edwards Chevrolet, selling Chevrolets, Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs.

He enjoyed hunting, and fishing. He even caught a 45-inch northern, which was his prize trophy.

After he retired, Elmer worked as a handyman for Marvin Pollard and Peterson Welding.

He is survived by his daughter, Patsy (Gary) Schultz of Neenah, Wis.; son Eric (Carol) Alexanderson of Columbus, Ga.; son-in-law, Douglas Carroll of Austin, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Roger, Rhonda, Angelo, Julio, Andrew and Pat Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ilene Carroll; brother, Eldon Alexanderson and sisters, Mildred Osterberg and Ceila Heydens.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. David Williamson of First Baptist Church in Norway officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
