John Merhalski

FLORENCE, Wis. — It is with deep sadness that I, Darren Merhalski, announce the passing of my uncle, John Frank Merhalski, on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the age of 90.

John was born on May 6, 1934, in Florence, Wis., the son of the late Frank and Norma (Cretors) Merhalski.

He was a proud graduate of Florence High School and a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church. John was also a dedicated 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus.

John’s professional life was spent working for Ron McMullen as a carpenter, where he was known for his hard work and dedication. Later in life, John worked and retired from Pride Manufacturing.

Outside of work, John was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time surrounded by nature. Photography was one of his favorite hobbies, capturing moments and landscapes that brought him joy. John was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan and a passionate supporter of baseball.

Above all, John had a special bond with his beloved dog, Cookie, who was truly his pride and joy. Cookie was more than just a pet; she was his faithful companion and brought him comfort and happiness. Their bond was a testament to the unconditional love and loyalty John shared with her.

John was the last surviving member of his family and in his passing, he joins his late siblings, Robert Merhalski, Loraine Kusmitch, and Carol “Honey” Olin, along with their parents.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Gloria Merhalski; nephews, Darren (Natalie) Merhalski, and Robert (Randy) Kusmitch; nieces, Tonya (Mel) Olin, Julianne (Dan) Eberhardt, JoAnne (Duke) Schneider, Joanie (John) Richtig, Lori (Brad) Balza, and Lynn (Marc) Beauregard; many more numerous great-nephews and nieces; and many lifelong friends.

A special thanks to the Florence Nursing Home staff for all the love and care they have shown for John in his short stay there and as a family, we cannot thank his long-term caregivers Gloria Merhalski, Steve Rochon, and Carla Wulf enough for looking after and caring for John for so many years.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in John’s name to Nose to Tail Animal Hospital, P.O. Box 526, Florence, Wis. 54121.

A Celebration of John’s life will be announced at a later date.
