George Servia
NORWAY — George John Servia, 85, of Norway, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Medilodge in Alpena, Mich. with his family at his side.
He was born on April 13, 1939, in Norway, the son of the late John and Mary (Bal) Servia.
George graduated from Norway High School in 1957. He entered the U.S. Army on June 5, 1962 and served his country until March 4, 1964.
He married Rosemary Wangles on Sept. 4, 1965, at St. George Catholic Church in Bark River.
George worked for Wittock Supply for 37 years, rising to warehouse manager. He enjoyed his hobby farm on Summit Road. On the farm, he raised beef and tended to his large vegetable garden with Rosemary’s help and guidance. The couple sold vegetables throughout the summer and enjoyed visiting with their regular customers each week.
Everyone knew that they were getting the best potatoes in the U.P., if they didn’t, George made sure to let them know his were by far the best. In the fall, George and Rosemary enjoyed spending time together, canning all their fruits of labor.
George and Rosemary took great pride in landscaping the farm, including many beautiful summer flowers and corn stalks and pumpkins in the fall. George also took pride in the many years that the City of Norway purchased cornstalks from him to decorate the town for the Leif Ericson festival.
George loved running into people whenever he was in Norway and often had great advice to give to anyone whom he encountered, whether they asked for it or not. You always knew exactly what he was thinking. He loved to joke and tease with anyone who took the time to chat. Rosemary knew that when he had to run to town for a quick errand, he would not be home anytime soon.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Rosemary; sons, Michael (Kimberly) Servia of Parker, Colo., Mark (Sandra) Servia of Greenville, Wis., and Randy (Wendy) Servia of Spruce, Mich.; grandchildren, Jack, Grace, Stephanie (fiance Michael), Melanie, Savannah and River; brother Walter (Gertie) Servia; sister Bernice Siegler; many nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Louis and Stella Wangles; brothers-in-law, Don Siegler and Louis Wangles, Jr.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 14 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at the church, with Fr. Marty Flynn, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
