IRON MOUNTAIN — Arlene Cavalieri Sullivan of Iron Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Arlene was the daughter of the late Louis Anthony Cavalieri and the late Ruth Pearl (LaHaie) Cavalieri. Arlene attended high school in both St. Helena, Calif. and graduated from Iron Mountain High School.
She later went on to earn her bachelor of arts degree in education from Northern Michigan University. While there, she was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. After college, she went on to teach in the Felch school district as a foreign language teacher and as a librarian. During her first year teaching in Felch, she met her future spouse, Tom Sullivan.
Together they applied for graduate school at Northern Michigan University, and two years later she received her master of arts in education. Arlene went on to earn a second master’s degree as education specialist. She was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in all disciplines. She then went on to teach in the Florence school district as a foreign language teacher and a librarian. She spent a total of 32 years as an educator.
Arlene loved to travel and enjoyed several wedding anniversaries at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island during Labor Day Jazz Weekend. Arlene and Tom traveled to Hilton Head Island for the Heritage Classic and golfed many of the fine golf courses on the island. Arlene traveled to Napa Valley, California, visiting with family, a wine train tour, and once on a hot air balloon ride.
Arlene especially enjoyed traveling abroad. Her first trip was to Spain with a coworker from school. She traveled with her mother, Ruth, on a grand tour of Europe, to London, Rome, Switzerland, and Paris. She went to Ireland for a summer vacation with a friend and to the Canary Islands with her cousin, Geri Mindok. She went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with her brother, Francis. She traveled to Florence, Italy with her brother and niece to visit her great niece, who was studying abroad. They stayed at a picturesque apartment overlooking the Ponte Vecchio bridge.
Arlene is survived by her brother, Francis Cavalieri and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Along with her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bernard Sullivan; and by her father and mother-in-law, Matthew and Gertrude (Nault) Sullivan.
There will be no services. A family celebration of life was held for Arlene at an earlier date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
