Herbert J. Lantz

1925-2024

Herbert J. Lantz

FELCH — Herbert J. Lantz, 99, of Felch, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024, at his home.

Born in Felch on Jan. 22, 1925, Herbert was the ninth child of 12, (five sisters and four brothers) of the late Edward and Anna (Dixon) Lantz.

At 17, Herbert left school and joined the U.S. Navy becoming a gunners mate third class during World War II. From the late ’40s into the later 1970s, he worked several jobs, last employed at the Groveland Mine as a maintenance mechanic. On April 18, 1994, he married Carol Mahoney. His children inspired him to get his diploma, and he achieved that in 2016.

Herbert enjoyed gardening, planting trees and watching birds and wild life. He was young at heart and always had a joke to tell. He knew people from all over and looked forward to when people stopped by for a visit.

He was always thankful for being able to live in his home with help from his wife, Carol; Sunny Days (Cindy was like family) and the team from the Iron Mountain VAMC; they came to his home regularly. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, DAV, Felch/Breen VFW, and the American Legion. Herbert loved going on drives with his wife and listening to George Straight, Tony Bennet and many more artists.

Herb lived a full and happy life. He was always positive and was always looked up to from family and friends. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family — 18 grandchildren, 22 great- grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; and Missy, his pride and joy; his children, Edward (Lisa), Charles (Michelle), Shannon Edward Twigg, Sheila (Norbert) Haas, Charlotte Briggs, Carrie (Brandon) Schultz; his youngest brother, Don; and Carol’s fives sisters and brothers-in law.

Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Shane; and daughter, Julie and (Keith) Wickman; his granddaughter, Jennifer Axley; plus the rest of his brothers/sisters, their spouses; and his first wife Phyllis (Bushey) Lantz.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Zion Lutheran Church of Metropolitan followed by a 2 p.m. service and lunch at the church. Pastor Lee Liverance will officiate. Pallbearers will be John Briggs, Cully Lantz, Tony Rossi, Tony Henning, Eric Wickman and Roger Wickman. Burial will be in the Felch Cemetery in the spring.
