Dr. Robert D. Mellon

KINGSFORD — Dr. Robert D. Mellon, 93, of Kingsford, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, at Marsfield Medical Center – Dickinson in Iron Mountain.

He was born in Norway, on Sept.13, 1931, son of Doctors Ambrose and Caroline Mellon. He was raised in Munising, and graduated from Mather High School. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Army where he received x-ray and laboratory training and was later stationed in a hospital in Japan during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he enrolled at the Lincoln College of Chiropractic in Indianapolis. He graduated in 1956 and joined his father in practice at the Mellon Chiropractic Clinic in Iron Mountain.

Bob married Elizabeth Gregory on June 29, 1957, in Thiensville, Wis., and together they raised five children. Bob loved hunting, fishing and playing cards — especially bridge and duplicate bridge. Camp life was very important to him and his family; in fact, deer season was his favorite time of year. He was happy to shoot his last buck this past fall at the age of 93!

He was a very active member of his church, St. Mary and St. Joseph. He was also active in the Michigan Chiropractic Association, was even president at one time, and was a Dickinson County Commissioner for eight years, serving on many committees. Jaycees was a fun and rewarding group for him, and he enjoyed all of the sporting events his children and grandchildren participated in and even coached some basketball and softball over the years. Upon retirement, gardening and yard work became a big part of his life.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth “Liz” Mellon; three sons: Dr. Michael (Lori) Mellon of Iron Mountain, Robert P. (Jean) Mellon of Iron Mountain, Dr. Peter (Cassandra) Mellon of Mt. Airy, Md., and two daughters: Lisa (Tom) Nelson of Iron Mountain and Drs. Monica (Steve) Terrian of Kingsford; 11 grandchildren, Travis (Rachel) Mellon of Tampa, Fla., Brigette (Adam) Wielechowski of Kingsford, Nicholas (Kelsey) Mellon of Norway, Danielle (Dodzi) Kossi of Chesterbrook, Pa., Carlyn (Jake) Luthart of Brown Deer, Wis., Kristin (Dan) Coleman of Brighton, Mich., Gregory (Lexi) Nelson of Norway, Megan (Andre) Elliott of Blackwood, N.J., Courtney Mellon of Stevensville, Md., Luke Terrian and Abby Terrian of Kingsford; and 10 great-grandchildren: Alessandro, Corinne, Liam, Lucas, Kaire, Arjen, Camden, Felix, Estelle and Callie Rose.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, David Mellon and Dennis Mellon; and his granddaughter, Jill Mellon.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Bob’s name.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 27 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Janusz Romanek will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
